The Royal Palace of Caserta is celebrating Ferragosto with a major restoration, offering visitors the beauty of the newly restored hallways. Thanks to the completion of restoration work on the six hallways of the Vanvitellian Complex, the museum further enriches the cultural experience of its visitors. The restoration project, entrusted to the company Fratelli Navarra, has seen its completion just in the last few days, with special focus on the androne that connects the IV and III courtyards, under which is the entrance to the Court Theater.
The restoration mainly involved the tufa structure of the barrel vaults, which underwent delicate structural consolidation. All stone materials, from bricks to marble, were subjected to disinfection, cleaning and to surface consolidation where necessary. The most damaged fragments were propped and pivoted to prevent further damage, while the gaps in the structures were grouted with compatible mortars. In the most deteriorated parts, reconstruction was carried out, followed by pictorial retouching and final protection to ensure the durability of the work.
Great attention was also paid to the aesthetic part, with the restoration of the original colors of the faux bricks and the painting of the coffered vaults with lime paint. At the same time, restoration was also carried out on the lanterns and lampposts adjacent to the entrances: they were cleaned, treated against oxidation, and the glass was replaced, while the metal sheets and supports were repainted according to specific color samples.
Thelighting of the hallways was re-functionalized, with a technical upgrade involving the 24 streetlights present. This intervention is part of a larger project of lighting enhancement of the Reggia’s courtyards, aimed at transforming them into livable public spaces even at night, as has already happened for the III courtyard thanks to the installation of the sound project “Locus Solis” by Marco Bagnoli.
One of the most interesting aspects of this intervention was the careful documentation of all phases of the restoration. The Royal Palace of Caserta has adopted this practice to create a historical memory of the work performed, which will be valuable for future maintenance and restoration work. This methodical approach will ensure more accurate and informed preservation of the palace’s architectural heritage.
The hallway restoration project was funded by the 2014/2020 Culture and Development Pon Complementary Action and Cohesion Operational Program, “Renovation and enhancement of roofs and facades.”
