A video work projected simultaneously in 64 locations to say no to violence against women

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, CAMeC in La Spezia is hosting a video installation by Emilia Persenico that will be screened simultaneously in 64 other locations in Italy and abroad to say no to feminicide.

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the CAMeC Modern and Contemporary Art Center of La Spezia is hosting a video installation entitled November 25, 2021 by artist Emilia Persenico.

This is a diffuse project in that the video work is projected simultaneously in sixty-four other locations in Italy and abroad: associations, libraries, foundations, committees, municipalities, cooperatives, and museums in Calabria, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Piedmont, Apulia, Sicily, Tuscany, Trentino-Alto Adige, Veneto, and the Italian cultural institutes of Australia, Canada, Switzerland, and Uruguay participate in denouncing violence against women in one voice.

November 25, 2021 aims to create a dialogue between women’s and men’s voicesin a virtual space that recalls domestic walls, the place where such violence often takes place. On the one hand, men speak out, expose themselves and self-declare themselves non-violent; on the other hand, women claim the freedom to be themselves. The color red, the symbol of this day, becomes a leitmotif in a play of black and white voices.

The work stems from the anger and discouragement that the data arouse: even today, in fact, there is one feminicide every three days and, according to ISTAT data, 31.5 percent of women, between the ages of 16 and 70, have suffered some form of violence, whether physical, psychological and/or sexual, in their lifetime.

Approaching painting as a means of rebellion against the conservative upbringing of her family of origin, Emilia Persenico studied at the New Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and the School of Contemporary Tapestry at Castello Sforzesco. From the beginning, her works recall the world of violated childhood, absent family, and the oblivion of pain and violence through the representation of interior images, such as the headless child, a recurring symbol of loneliness. Her tapestries, drawings and textile sculptures come to life through the combination of paper, jute and iron, materials that suggest fragility but at the same time convey cherished themes of home, body, dress, memory and absence in presence.

The artist believes in the strength and power of the voice: as in November 25, 2021, in another of her video works entitled Io dico instead she presents her artist’s book accompanied by a sound carpet of voices, testimonies of women who suffered, as children, sexual violence within the family environment.

You can see the work at the museum entrance throughout CAMeC’s opening hours, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Nov. 25, 2021.

Access is free of charge.
