Andy Warhol's family sells one of Marilyn's first double silkscreens

One of the earliest known silkscreens of Marilyn made by Andy Warhol and belonging to the family until now will go up for auction on May 17.

Andy Warhol ’s family is selling one of his works to Phillips Arts Auctions, which will soon put it up for auction. It is one of the earliest experiments of the famous 1962 double silkscreen of Marilyn and which, until recently, belonged to the artist’s brother, Paul, to whom he sold a total of 11 works 50 years ago.
Following his and his wife Anna ’s deaths (in 2014 and 2016, respectively), the heirs are beginning to sell the collection.

Robert Manley of Phillips showed the work on Instagram with the following text, “Phillips is fortunate to be dealing with a double Marilyn, received directly from Andy Warhol’s family, where it has been for more than 50 years. Painted in 1952, this is one of the first series of Marilyn that the artist created shortly after her tragic death, by which he was inspired. Warhol executed the right side in his usual format, but for the left side he deliberately omitted a number of elements, leaving the face with a ghost-like appearance. The focal point on the left side are the actress’s lips, an image Warhol isolated to create his singular works between the 1950s and 1960s. Shown here is a photo of Andy’s older brother Paul, with this work hanging above him and his wife Anne beside him. With an estimate of $3-4 million, the work will go up for auction in Phillips’ Evening Sale on May 17 at 5 p.m.”
