Art historian Lea Mattarella passes away at age 54

Art historian Lea Mattarella, lecturer and journalist, a signature of Repubblica, passes away at 54.

Art historian Lea Mattarella, a contributor to newspapers such as La Stampa and Repubblica (her last article appeared in the issue of Robinson, Repubblica’s cultural insert, last Sunday), passed away yesterday after an illness at the age of only 54. An esteemed journalist, she has served as a lecturer at the Academies of Fine Arts in Naples, Macerata, L’Aquila and Rome since 1993. She was a niece of the president of the Republic, as the daughter of his brother Antonio.

Lea Mattarella was also an active curator of exhibitions: her signature on the exhibition Le donne che hanno fatto l’Italia, held at the Vittoriano in Rome in 2011. The last exhibition she curated, at the Alberto Peola Artecontamporanea gallery, closed last Dec. 23 and the title was White noise: it was a solo show by the artistic duo Botto&Bruno, composed of Gianfranco Botto and Roberta Bruno from Turin.

Funeral services are being held tomorrow, Wednesday, Jan. 3, at the Church of the Artists in Rome. Lea Mattarella leaves behind her partner Gian Giotto Borrelli, also an art historian, and her daughter Ottavia. For the art world this is a serious loss.
