Baby bottle ancestor found in the Valley of the Temples

During the latest excavation campaign in the Valley of the Temples, archaeologists found a guttus, the ancestor of the baby bottle.

During the current excavation campaign in Agrigento, in the Valley of the Temples, a guttus, or theancestor of the baby bottle, was found in the area of the Hellenistic Theater of Akragas.

“Excavating the fill of one of the structures that must have supported the cavea, a deposit of artifacts referable to a propitiatory rite was found. The objects found are vases of daily use, mainly used for drinking and containing liquids, including the small vase with a spout, a guttus, a real feeding trough,” said the director of the Archaeological Park, Giuseppe Parello. He added, “The vases may have been used for a libation ritual; the presence of the spouted vase leads back to the moment of birth, and thus to the origin of life. Also interesting is the intentional breaking of the vases, which, like today, certainly had an augural meaning.”

This excavation campaign has unearthed new objects that tell the story of past daily life at this archaeological site.

Director Giuseppe Parello concludes, “With this discovery the research campaign closes, which invites us to start again soon to completely bring the theater back to life.”
