Brescia, Roman remains emerge from sewer excavations: even a column and an altar

In Brescia, Roman remains resurface from excavations of the sewage system: a column, two milestones, an altar.

A surprise from the excavations for the sewerage system in Via Milano in Brescia: during the works, in fact, some Roman remains were found by technicians of the A2A company in charge of the city’s water service. Spreading the news is the Municipality of Brescia.

These are three stone milestones, on which long inscriptions with imperial titling, an altar with an honorary inscription, and an eight-foot column can be read. On one of the cippus, the numeral II, refers to two miles, which corresponds exactly to the approximately 2.8 km separating the point of the find from the heart of the Roman city, the forum area and the Capitolium. The materials (which appear to date back to Diocletian’s time) have been recovered and will be taken over in the coming hours by the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the provinces of Bergamo and Brescia: they will be cleaned, studied and restored. On the site, the superintendence was already coordinating an archaeological garrison: the agency will identify as soon as possible the most appropriate space for proper display and enhancement of the finds. All activities are carried out under the scientific direction of Serena Solano, archaeological officer of the Brescia superintendency.

Brescia Mayor Emilio Del Bono, after hearing Francesca Morandini, head of the Collections and Archaeological Areas Service at the Brescia Civic Museums of Art and History, reported that the milestones, in particular, are the first ones found so close to the city. Now the city will think, together with the superintendence, about how to enhance the find.

“A very important find for our city,” comments Deputy Mayor Laura Castelletti. “Now the Soprintendenza Archelogica, with Dr. Serena Solano, will take care of the study and valorization of this important find. It would be wonderful to display the inscriptions near where they were found or to welcome them in the halls of the Santa Giulia museum, right in the Roman section, now being set up.”
