Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus is on its way to Paris.

Caravaggio's Supper at Emmaus is traveling to Paris to arrive at the Musée Jacquemart-André for an exhibition dedicated to the artist.

Caravaggio ’s famous painting depicting the Supper at Emmaus kept at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan has left its home to be temporarily transferred to the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris: the work is in fact one of Michelangelo Merisi ’s masterpieces on display from September 21, 2018 to January 28, 2019 on the occasion of the exhibition"Caravage à Rome, amis et ennemis," curated by Francesca Cappelletti and Pierre Curie.

Pinacoteca di Brera director James Bradburne and restorer Andrea Carini carefully witnessed the disassembly, as well as the packing, and will accompany the canvas to the Paris venue to check its transport. The work is transported using a travel frame that absorbs mechanical stress, packaging with three layers of synthetic foams of different densities, and a climate-controlled container.

The Supper at Emmaus, located in room 28 of the Brera Art Gallery and recently the subject of new lighting, was painted by Caravaggio between 1605 and 1606 and was sold to Marquis Patrizi for display in his Roman palace, where it was still housed in 1939 when it was purchased for the Pinacoteca by theAssociazione Amici di Brera.

In its place, Room 28 will display the Supper of the Pilgrims of Emmaus, a work by Rembrandt from the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris itself.

A temporary exchange of great masterpieces born out of an agreement between the two museums.

When the exhibition is over, Caravaggio’s painting will return to the Pinacoteca di Brera and will be placed in dialogue with Rembrandt’s work until the end of February 2019.
