Calogero Rizzuto, director of the Archaeological Park of Syracuse, has left us at the age of 65. After testing positive for Covid-19, Rizzuto spent the last two weeks in the intensive care unit of Syracuse’sUmberto I Hospital and passed away as his condition worsened. However, the Syracuse prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into whether there were any delays in rescuing the official.

In his career, Rizzuto was a third-ranking manager in the Cultural Heritage sector of the Sicilian Region and was a member of the Syracuse ProvinceOrder of Architects. He later led the Superintendencies of Cultural Heritage in Ragusa and Syracuse, until the summer of 2019, when the region entrusted him with the job of director of the Archaeological Park of Syracuse.

The president of the Sicilian Region, Nello Musumeci, commented, “I had met him a few months ago, immediately appreciating his human and professional qualities, which is why I had appointed him to re-launch the archaeological area of Syracuse. With his passing, the region loses a serious and capable executive. To the family go the condolences of the regional government.”

The mayor of Avola, Luca Cannata, also remembers him: “met immediately after taking office we were in tune talking about the future of the archaeological and historical heritage. He had great prospects for growth from the Archaeological Park of Syracuse and the cultural heritage of the cities of our province as for the management of the Roman Villa. On my part and that of the city administration I express deep sadness at this news and go my heartfelt sympathy to the family.”

The condolences of the president and mayor of Avola Luca Cannata are also joined by those of the Inda Foundation.
