Florence, a new museum will house the entire Alinari Archives

The Alinari Archives will be fully displayed in a new museum based in the Villa Fabbricotti in Florence.

TheAlinari Archives will be on full display in a new museum, to be housed in Florence’s Villa Fabbricotti, as soon as the work necessary to house this great photographic heritage is completed.

Announcing the acquisition of the Archives by the Region of Tuscany were Enrico Rossi, president of Tuscany; Monica Barni, vice-president and councilor for culture; Claudio De Polo, president of the Fratelli Alinari Society; and Luigi Tomassini, honorary president of the Italian Society for the Study of Photography. “A heritage of the highest historical value such as the Alinari photographic archive will become public. With this acquisition, the Region has prevented it from being dispersed and sold to private individuals and perhaps even parceled out to private museums and galleries. It will be our task to enhance its value and promote its knowledge, encouraging public access and consultation,” said Enrico Rossi. He added that this is the “most important cultural and political operation that Tuscany has done in the last ten years.”

It will take 27 months to set up the new museum, and overall, between the acquisition and the setting up, the cost of the operation is about 15 million euros. In addition, by May 2020, a foundation will be created to enhance the Alinari heritage.

The Archives has more than five million photographs documenting the history of Italy and the world from the mid-19th century to the present day. Founded in 1852, it is the oldest company in the world in the field of photography and communication through images.

In addition to photographs, photography books and magazines, color slides, photographic equipment, cameras, and lenses will be on display in the museum.
