From today mandatory green pass to visit museums, exhibitions, monuments. What you need to know

Starting today, Friday, August 6, 2021, the green pass becomes mandatory for visiting museums, exhibitions, monuments, libraries, and other cultural venues. Everything you need to know.

After weeks of heated controversy, the green pass, or the green certificate that places restrictions on those who have not been vaccinated against Covid, goes into effect at all cultural venues. This means that, starting today Friday, August 6, 2021, anyone entering a cultural venue will have to show the health pass at the entrance. If visitors are without the pass, they will not be allowed to enter.

The green pass for places of culture was established by Article 3 of Decree-Law No. 105 of July 23, 2021, which requires a health pass starting Friday, August 6, at the entrance of “museums, other cultural institutions and places, and exhibitions.” Along with the pass, it will also be necessary to show your ID to prove that the pass shown to the museum or cultural venue operator is your own.

What are the places of culture where the green pass is mandatory

The decree, as seen, explicitly mentions “museums, other institutes and places of culture and exhibitions.” The green certificate is therefore mandatory at any museum, any exhibition, and all places of culture, which are defined by Legislative Decree No. 42 of 2004, i.e., the Cultural Heritage Code. Under the Code, “institutes and places of culture” are defined as museums, libraries and archives, archaeological areas and parks, and monumental complexes.

Please note: even with the green pass, access to museums and places of culture still remains subject to the security measures in place until now. Therefore there will still be restricted access, it will be mandatory to wear a mask, sanitize your hands and have your body temperature taken at the entrance. Reservations for admission to state museums and exhibitions are not mandatory but still recommended.

How to get the green pass

There are three ways to get the green pass: 1. if you have received at least one dose of the anti-Covid vaccine; 2. if you have a certificate stating that you have recovered from Sars-CoV-2 infection (validity is 6 months); 3. if you have a negative result of a rapid molecular or antigenic test to Sars-CoV-2 virus (validity is 48 hours). The provisions do not apply to children under 12 years of age and exempt persons based on appropriate medical certification. Please note: For those receiving the first dose of vaccine, the green pass is valid from the 15th day after administration.

It is the Ministry of Health that issues the green certification based on data submitted by the Regions and Autonomous Provinces regarding vaccination, test negativity or recovery from COVID-19. The certification is issued in a printable digital format. The pass can be downloaded from www.dgc.gov.it by entering data from one’s health card or digital identity (Spid or Cie), downloading AppImmuni or App IO, and soon from the Regional Electronic Health Record site. Those without digital tools will be able to request the green pass from their primary care physician, pediatrician or pharmacy.
