Gianmarco Mazzi is sworn in this morning at the Quirinale as the new Minister of Tourism, officially taking office in the government led by Giorgia Meloni. The ceremony is being held in the presence of the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella, who received the newly appointed minister about half an hour ago for the formal swearing-in necessary to make the appointment operational. Mazzi, until now undersecretary for Culture, takes over from Daniela Santanchè, who had resigned from the Tourism ministry last March 25, paving the way for a reshuffle within the executive. He arrived at the Quirinale around 10:15 a.m., accompanied by his chief secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Rita Rubini, confirming the continuity of his institutional path in recent years.
The appointment marks a significant step in the career of Mazzi, a figure with a long background in show business, television production and cultural organization, before entering politics. Born in Verona on July 1, 1960, with a law degree from his hometown university, Mazzi built his notoriety starting in the 1980s, moving between music, television and major events. In 1981 he was among the promoters of the Italian national singers’ team, a charitable initiative that involved some of the main protagonists of Italian music. Throughout his career he has collaborated with leading artists such as Pooh, Gianni Morandi and Lucio Dalla, contributing to the “Dalla/Morandi” recording project, among others. He also worked with Caterina Caselli, participating in launching the career of Francesco Baccini, whose manager he was for about ten years.
Since 1992 he has been in charge of Adriano Celentano’s artistic and television activities through the Clan, taking part in the production of the album “Mina Celentano” and coordinating numerous successful television productions. These include programs broadcast on Raiuno such as “Frankly I don’t give a damn” in 1999, “125 million caz..te” in 2001 and “Rockpolitik” in 2005, as well as “Rock Economy” on Channel 5 in 2012, broadcast from the Arena in Verona.
In parallel, between 1995 and 1997 he served as communications director for CGD East West, a label of the Time Warner group, consolidating his experience in the record industry as well. Since 2003 he has been involved in the organization of the Sanremo Festival, working alongside Tony Renis in the 2004 edition and then taking on the role of artistic director in several editions between 2005 and 2012.
In the following years he collaborated with figures such as Riccardo Cocciante, for whom he contributed to the production of the musical opera “Giulietta e Romeo,” and with Dario Fo, working on productions dedicated to St. Francis and Maria Callas, with the participation of Paola Cortellesi. Other collaborations include Zucchero Fornaciari, Mogol and Massimo Giletti. For Rai 2 he also curated the Italian edition of the talent show The Voice.
In 2015 he worked on the organization of the opening ceremony of Expo 2015, while in 2017 he was involved in the television project “La notte di Vasco” on the occasion of the Modena Park concert. In the same year, he also launched the “Sanremo Young” project. From 2017 to 2022 he served as artistic director and CEO of the Arena di Verona management company, further consolidating his managerial profile.
His direct entry into politics came after an initial institutional experience in 2004 as a consultant for the Ministry of Communications. In the 2022 parliamentary elections, he was a candidate for the Chamber of Deputies with Fratelli d’Italia, being elected in the Veneto 2 plurality constituency. During the 19th legislature he joined the Culture, Science and Education Commission.
With the birth of the Meloni government, on Oct. 31, 2022, he was appointed undersecretary of state at the Ministry of Culture, a post he officially assumed on Nov. 2, working alongside ministers Gennaro Sangiuliano and Alessandro Giuli.
