Gipsoteche e Musei d'artista in Toscana: study day in Montevarchi (Arezzo)

Cassero per la Scultura Italiana dell'Ottocento e del Novecento, in collaboration with the Centro Cagianelli per il '900, is organizing a day of study on Tuscany's Gipsoteche e Musei d'artista, with talks on the processes of conservation, valorization and management of the collections.

The Cassero per la scultura italiana dell’Ottocento e del Novecento - Museo Civico di Montevarchi (Arezzo) is organizing, in collaboration with the Centro Cagianelli per il ’900, a study day dedicated to Gipsoteche and Musei d’artista in Toscana. The initiative will take place on November 19, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at the Palazzo del Podestà in Montevarchi. The event’s scientific committee, composed of Alfonso Panzetta, Diego Esposito, Federica Tiripelli and Francesca Cagianelli, has selected twelve realities among Gipsoteche and Musei d’artista, with the aim of outlining a broad picture of Tuscan institutions capable of documenting the activity of artists between the 19th and 20th centuries. The structures identified have different legal statuses and management methods, but they share the function of preserving a significant plastic and documentary heritage, whose value has grown in recent years thanks to the attention of new generations of scholars.

The study day will feature talks by the directors and curators of the Gipsoteche and Museums, who will explain the artists represented in the collections, the conservation methods and the enhancement strategies adopted. The event is part of a broader debate on the protection and promotion of Tuscany’s artistic heritage, with a focus on 19th- and 20th-century sculpture. The initiative is made possible with the contribution of the Banca del Valdarno Credito Cooperativo and is supported by the partnership of the Valdarno Museum System, the National Association of Houses of Memory and the Friends of Il Cassero Association for 19th- and 20th-century Italian Sculpture. It has received the patronage of ICOM Italy, the Department of History, Archaeology, Geography, Art and Performing Arts of the University of Florence and the Department of Historical Sciences and Cultural Heritage of the University of Siena.
