Greece, since last week pets can enter archaeological sites

Important news in Greece, where the Ministry of Culture has decided to allow pets into more than 120 archaeological sites. The decision was made last week. Previously, animals were forbidden entry.

In Greece since last week it has been possible to bring pets to archaeological sites. This is an important innovation for the country, where until now only guide dogs for the visually impaired were allowed. The pet-friendly decision was made last April 27 by the Central Archaeological Council, a body of Greece’s Ministry of Culture, and affects more than 120 sites.

“With the positive opinion of the Central Archaeological Council to allow pets to follow their owners in visiting more than 120 archaeological sites,” stressed Minister Lina Mendoni, “we take a first, but important, step toward harmonizing the framework of accessibility to monuments and archaeological sites on the model of other European countries, which already apply rules for the entry of pets.” In Italy for example, the entry of pets is already allowed at many sites.

“It is obvious,” the minister reiterated, however, “that entry cannot be applied to all archaeological sites. In areas with intense concentrations of visitors and with specific approach possibilities, such as the Acropolis in Athens, entry for our little friends would not be easy, as they themselves would be in danger due to the high attendance, but they could also cause discomfort to visitors who did not know of their presence. However, in areas of thousands of hectares, such as Vergina, Delos, ancient Messene, Mycenae, Philippi, dogs that are supervised, on leash, with health booklet and with the conditions set by the Council’s opinion, will be able to accompany their friends during the visit. The same can be done in the case of a large pet, provided that the owner agrees to make him wear a muzzle.”

Among the sites excluded from the measure, in addition to the Acropolis in Athens, are, for example, Knossos, ancient Olympia, and the site of Delphi. More than 110 sites have also been provided with areas at the entrance where animals can remain for as long as their owners are visiting. However, animals will not be allowed inside monuments, in theaters, temples, vaulted tombs, and on the mosaic floors of monuments.

It is necessary that companions be provided with leashes up to 1 m long or that animals be carried in their arms or inside carriers. In addition, upon entry, owners will be required to show a health booklet, and animals will be allowed to enter as long as their companion brings the necessary items for the immediate cleaning of the surrounding area of any droppings.
