Here are the ten cities on the short list for the 2020 Italian capital of culture

The Ministry of Culture has published the short list of the ten cities vying for the title of Italian Capital of Culture 2020.

The Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism has released the short list with the names of the ten cities vying to become Italian Capital of Culture 2020: they are Agrigento, Bitonto, Casale Monferrato, Macerata, Merano, Nuoro, Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia and Treviso. The ten “finalists” come from a batch of forty-six candidates who responded to last May’s call for applications, and will now have to present their projects during the hearings of the commission chaired by Stefano Baia Curioni.

The title of Italian Capital of Culture 2020 will be awarded during a ceremony to be held at the ministry’s headquarters on Via del Collegio Romano in Rome on February 16, at 11 a.m.: Minister Dario Franceschini will be present. Since its inception, the “Italian Capital of Culture,” a city designated each year to host events, events, exhibitions and activities of importance for “making the value of cultural leverage for social cohesion, ’integration, creativity, innovation, economic development, and individual and collective well-being” (so MiBACT in a note) has seen Ravenna, Cagliari, Lecce, Perugia and Siena (2015), Mantua (2016), Pistoia (2017), and Palermo (2018) take turns. 2019 will have no Italian capital since the city of Matera will be European Capital of Culture.
