Italy will help the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro restart. Loans from Naples and Herculaneum coming to Brazil.

Italy will collaborate with Brazil as part of the reconstruction of the National Museum in Rio de Janeiro. Loans from our museums will also arrive.

Italy will offer its help to Brazil to enable the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro to restart after the heavy fire it suffered in September last year. Specifically, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage has announced a collaboration with Brazil that will basically follow two directions: technical work and loans of objects from Italian collections.

As for the first point, Italy will offer aid in the reconstruction of the building. Moreover, in early June, the Brazilian Ministry of Education allocated to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (which manages the Museu Nacional) the sum of 908,800 Brazilian reals (just over 200,000 euros) for the first stage of reconstruction of the facade and roof.

In addition, works and artifacts from our museums will arrive in Brazil: it has already been announced that objects will be sent from Herculaneum and the National Archaeological Museum in Naples. In addition to loans, MiBAC will collaborate with the National Museum of Rio on the restoration of a Greek Kore found in 1853 in Italy and part of the Brazilian institute’s collections (the work was damaged in the 2018 fire but was not destroyed). The sculpture came to Brazil as part of the personal collection of Teresa Cristina of the Two Sicilies, consort of Emperor Peter II of Brazil: the collection was part of the marriage dowry.

The collaboration between Italy and Brazil was confirmed at an international symposium on museums held in Rio on June 19 and organized by the Italian Cultural Institute: the event was attended by Undersecretary for Cultural Heritage Lucia Borgonzoni and a delegation of staff from several Italian and Brazilian museums.
