The first major retrospective mounted at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence dedicated to Andrea del Verrocchio closed with an extraordinary success. Since March 9, 2019, over the course of four months of programming, the monographic exhibition curated by Francesco Caglioti and Andrea De Marchi has recorded more than 140,000 visitors, and the Bargello Museum, which housed a special section of the exhibition, was visited during the same period by 111,650 people.
The statistics showed thevery high level of satisfaction with the monographic exhibition, with 98 percent of the public saying they were fully satisfied with it. Thirty-six percent of the visitors were from Florence, while about 50,000 people came to the city of Florence especially for the exhibition.
Great success on social media as well.
"After breaking all records with contemporary art, Palazzo Strozzi returned in style to Renaissance art with the first retrospective dedicated Verrocchio, one of the most important artists of the 15th century. Verrocchio, Leonardo’s Master presented the multifaceted activity of the master and his workshop while investigating the beginnings of the genius Leonardo da Vinci, precisely in the year of the international celebrations dedicated to him. The excellent result of the exhibition once again confirms the importance of Palazzo Strozzi’s offerings, which continue to produce exhibitions that are as original and courageous as they are successful, keeping faith with the Foundation’s plan to bring world-class cultural events to Florence. This success is the result of our collaboration with the Bargello Museums and the generous support of the world’s most important museums, which have enabled us to produce a truly unique and unrepeatable exhibition," said Arturo Galansino, director general of the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi.
"The National Museum of the Bargello has been enlivened in recent months by many visitors who have finally appreciated the works of Verrocchio and his collaborators and followers in the lively Florentine artistic contest of the 15th and early 16th centuries. In a circular exhibition itinerary between the two venues, masterpieces by Donatello, Luca della Robbia, Mino da Fiesole, Desiderio da Settignano, Antonio Rossellino, and Benedetto da Maiano, preserved at the Bargello, were also in dialogue with those created by Verrocchio and his workshop along with works never before exhibited or restored for the exhibition. The Bargello sections, in particular, not only illustrated the genesis and success of Verrocchio’s absolute masterpieces, such as theIncredulity of St. Thomas, but also allowed visitors to appreciate workshop practice and the serial diffusion of wooden sculpture of the time. We are particularly pleased that the exhibition was also an opportunity for many Florentines to return to the Bargello and ’rediscover’ well-known works in new and stimulating comparisons," added Paola D’Agostino, director of the Bargello Museums.
Now Palazzo Strozzi is preparing for the next exhibition to be hosted at the Florentine museum venue: from September 28, 2019, to January 12, 2020, a major retrospective dedicated to Natalia Goncharova, an artist of the early 20th century avant-garde, will be on view.
