MiBACT, part of image proceeds to a private company: signed agreement with Bridgeman Images

MiBACT signs an agreement with Bridgeman Images to market images of 439 Italian museums and cultural sites.

Already causing much discussion is the agreement that the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism has signed with Bridgeman Images s.r.l., a company that represents the Italian branch of Bridgeman Images, a leading company in the field of distributing the marketing of images of art and culture. The agreement was signed on April 4 after lengthy negotiations and will allow Bridgeman Images to acquire, on a temporary and non-exclusive basis, images of the cultural heritage of 439 Italian museums and cultural sites under the General Directorate of Museums, for their indirect reproduction, distribution and international marketing. Among the sites covered by the agreement are many of the country’s most important sites: the Uffizi, Pompeii Park, the Pinacoteca di Brera, the Cenacolo Vinciano, GNAM in Rome, and the Pantheon.

“The use of the images,” reads a note, “is allowed for editorial purposes and for the production of products such as documentaries and film set-ups, stationery and games, compatible with the cultural destination.” Directors of autonomous museums and museum centers will be able to sign detailed application agreements to allow the temporary acquisition of the granted images and select areas of use.

The agreement stipulates that the Ministry will receive 50 percent of Bridgeman Images’ turnover with reference to regulated activities: proceeds that will be used for cultural heritage protection and enhancement activities.
