The Milan City Council has approved the proposed donation submitted by LVMH Profumi e Cosmetici Italia, intended for the conservative restoration of the Verziere Fountain. Designed by architect Giuseppe Piermarini in 1782, the fountain in Piazza Fontana now shows signs of time: encrustation, bleaching and surface disintegration caused by the continuous action of water and weathering. The last intervention was in 2012-2013 and had involved cleaning, plastering, and renewal of the planting.
The new restoration includes full cost coverage by LVMH (a group in the luxury sector created by the merger of Moët Hennessy and Louis Vuitton), in the amount of 87,800 euros: about 68,800 allocated directly to the work and the remainder to design, construction management, as well as charges and expenses. The intervention will be supervised by the City’s Fountains and Monuments Unit together with the Superintendency.
“I sincerely thank LVMH for this donation,” stresses Councillor for Neighborhoods and Participation Gaia Romani, “which will allow one of the symbols of our city’s history to be restored to its original beauty. A monument that has spanned nearly 250 years of Milan’s life and that also represents an educational and social inclusion opportunity, helping to strengthen the link between the city’s past and future. Its restoration therefore means protecting the very history and culture of our community.”
