October 25, 2025 marks a new stage in the history of Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, which opens its new headquarters to the public at 2 Place du Palais-Royal in the heart of Paris.
The prestigious building that houses the foundation is a classic example of Haussmannian architecture, once home to the renowned Grands Magasins du Louvre. Today, thanks to the vision of renowned architect Jean Nouvel, this space is being transformed into a state-of-the-art exhibition environment that harmoniously blends historical heritage and architectural innovation. Nouvel’s intervention is distinguished by its visual openness to the city: large windows relate the urban landscape to the interior, creating a continuity between art and the surrounding Parisian context.
The new venue comprises five mobile platforms that dynamically redefine the concept of exhibition space. This architecture not only offers new possibilities for staging, but itself becomes an integral part of the artistic experience, transforming according to the works and events hosted.
Opening this new chapter will be theExposition Générale, a wide-ranging exhibition project that can be visited until the end of August 2026. The exhibition aims to be a grand celebration of the Fondation Cartier’s cultural identity: through some six hundred works, created by more than one hundred artists who over the course of forty years, since 1984, have collaborated with the foundation, the exhibition recounts the plurality of visions and languages that have defined its history.
It is not only a tribute to the past, but also a glimpse into the future. The new site and the Exposition Générale represent the intention to continue to be a living, open space capable of welcoming the many forms of contemporary art and stimulating new reflections on today’s world.
“Entering such an impressive site, by location and history, implies a form of invention. The space is characterized by a different way of doing things: a way of conceiving how artists can have maximum expressive power,” said Jean Nouvel.
