Pompeii fugitive's head unearthed: reminiscent of Munch's Scream

Archaeologists have found the head of Pompeii's claudicant escapee: the gaping mouth is heartbreaking.

The head of the claudicant fugitive, whose skeleton was discovered in the excavations of Pompeii a month ago, has been found. This was announced by the director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, Massimo Osanna.

The head has its mouth wide open in a sort of Munch’s Scream and its teeth still largely attached.

“That mouth so open tells us that his death must have been even more terrible than what we had already imagined, because now it is clear that the poor fugitive who had lingered in the street when it was too late to save himself, was not killed by heat shock, which at least would have been instantaneous, he died suffocated by dust and ash,” Osanna said.

Both the skeleton and the head of the fugitive will be studied in every detail in the specialist laboratory in Pompeii.

The director is convinced that this is “just the beginning of a new era of discoveries.”
