Pornhub removes museum content: Uffizi, Louvre and Prado had warned porn site

Pornhub has removed its guides to erotic masterpieces in the Uffizi, Louvre and Prado: the three institutions had in fact warned the porn site for unauthorized use of the material.

No dice for Pornhub: the world’s most visited porn site has been forced to remove from its platform some content from its Classic Nudes series, the special guides to erotic masterpieces launched just a month ago. In particular, the site had to remove content on the Uffizi, the Louvre, and the Prado Museum, i.e., half of the guides in the series: in fact, the three institutions did not like Pornhub’s initiative since, according to museum officials, the porn portal did not ask the museums for the proper permissions to make use of their content.

On Classic Nudes remain for the time being the guides of the museums that did not raise the issue, namely the Musée d’Orsay, the National Gallery in London, and the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Pornhub had launched the project with the intention of helping museums recover after the pandemic and reach new audiences, thanks to its content that included text guides and audio guides to major masterpieces, as well as porn-infused “reinterpretations” of some of the works, featuring actress MySweetApples (which have instead been removed entirely: gone, too, are those of the museums that did not wary of Pornhub). It is precisely reinterpretation without permission that is at the heart of the actions that the Uffizi (for the Venus of Urbino), the Louvre (for the portrait of Gabrielle d’Estrées) and the Prado (for the Maja desnuda) have taken against the porn portal.

The Uffizi, in particular, have warned Pornhub because the site has acted contrary to the museum’s regulations, which provide for authorizations for the use of images and, where required, even the payment of a reproduction fee, which the porn site has never paid. All museums, in fact, were involved in the initiative without their knowledge, and now the question is: will Pornhub stop and was it all a publicity stunt, or will the portal really believe in the project and involve other institutions?
