Presented the 2019 calendar of free days at the Uffizi Galleries

Presented the 2019 calendar of twelve free days at the Uffizi Galleries. These are highly symbolic and evocative dates.

The Uffizi Galleries presented the 2019 calendar of free admission days. There will be 12 free admission dates that will be divided into three types: those that will cover all the spaces of the Galleries, namely the Uffizi, Pitti and the Boboli Gardens; those that will apply only to the Uffizi; and those that will be active only in the Pitti Palace and the Boboli Gardens.

Free days throughout the complex will be March 24, the Sunday on the eve of the Florentine New Year and the birth of Francesco I de’ Medici; June 23, the eve of St. John, the patron saint of Florence; Oct.11 in tribute to Vittoria Della Rovere; and Oct. 31 in remembrance of the Family Pact made by the last Medici descendant, Electress Palatine Anna Maria Luisa with Francesco Stefano of Lorraine in 1737, by which the collections and cultural heritage of the Grand Dukes were permanently bound to remain in Florence and Tuscany.

Free days in the Gallery of Statues and Paintings will be May 26, commemoration of the Georgofili Massacre; June 2, Republic Day; andAugust 11, the eve of the anniversary of the tragic fire that devastated part of the Gallery on August 12, 1762. And again on Nov. 6 to celebrate Leopold de’ Medici’s birthday.

Free admission to Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens on May 17, in tribute to the role of Palazzo Pitti, which from 1865 became a Savoy royal palace, where Victor Emmanuel II resided during the six years that Florence was the Capital of Italy until 1871; on August 4 in memory of the dramatic Night of the Bridges (August 4 (1944); on August 27 in remembrance of Cosimo I’s coronation as Grand Duke; and on November 30 in celebration of Tuscan Day.

Uffizi Galleries Director Eike Schmidt said, "The days chosen for this initiative are highly symbolic and evocative anniversaries not only for the history of Florence but also for the history of Tuscany and Italy. The program of free admission to our museums can therefore also have an educational value, and be useful so that all citizens can remember and celebrate in the sign of art and culture some of the most important moments and personalities of the past of us all."
