Rome mayor's announcement: 'From Feb. 1, the Trevi Fountain will be paid for by tourists'

As of Feb. 1, 2026, a ticket fee will be introduced in Rome for tourists at six monumental and museum sites that have hitherto had free access, including the Trevi Fountain with a two-euro fee.

If a few days ago it was only a hypothesis, now the announcement has come from the mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri: visiting the Trevi Fountain will be chargeable for tourists, but it will not be the only Roman monument and museum site that will introduce an entrance fee.

In fact, during a press conference held at the Sala Esedra, the first citizen announced that starting February 1, a ticket fee will be introduced in Rome for tourists at six monumental and museum sites that until now have had free access: the Trevi Fountain (only for entry in front of the basin, with a two-euro ticket), Villa di Massenzio, the Napoleonic Museum, the Giovanni Barracco Museum of Ancient Sculpture, the Carlo Bilotti Museum, and the Pietro Canonica Museum.

The mayor clarified that, starting Feb. 1, all museums and monumental sites in Roma Capitale will be totally free for residents of Rome and the Metropolitan City.

The measure to institute a ticket for the Trevi Fountain and five other municipal museum sites, added Rome’s Culture Councillor Massimiliano Smeriglio, “allows us to shorten distances, remembering that Rome is not only a city of tourists but also of flesh-and-blood residents, who deserve to rediscover the great beauty. We put a ticket to allow free accessibility for Romans, a portion of the revenue can be allocated to free access for residents. It is a social justice measure.”
