Sold for just over 400 thousand euros the Social Theater of Amelia. Mayor writes to MiBACT

In Amelia, Umbria, the Teatro Sociale, the town's 18th-century jewel, was sold for just over 400,000 euros.

An 18th-century jewel: it is the Social Theater of Amelia, built in 1783 (thus ten years older than the Fenice in Venice), decorated with frescoes by Domenico Bruschi dating back to the 1880s, known for its interior made entirely of wood and for the fact that it is a collective undertaking, since it was desired by a group of nobles and bourgeois of Amelia, a Umbrian town in the province of Terni, who entrusted the project to the Amelia architect Stefano Cansacchi. This splendid Italian-style theater, which has remained intact in its structure and partly even in its mechanisms, has just been sold to a real estate investment company, for the sum of 414,000 euros, at auction.

The adjudication, however, is provisional, because the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, could assert the right of first refusal, based on the provisions of Articles 60-62 of the Cultural Heritage Code in the case of alienated property. The auction, which was held last November 17, started from a base of 206,000 euros and was attended by four parties. The Social Theater of Amelia is an asset bound by MiBACT, which means that the intended use cannot be changed: however, this does not seem to be a problem, since the new owner of the theater, from what transpires from the first rumors, is intent on continuing to use it as a venue for cultural events, but has also let it be known that it could become a venue for ceremonies. However, the details will be discussed with preservation agencies.

That there are no dangers to the intended use is also stressed by the Theatre Society, the now former owner of the theater, which let it be known in a note that “the theater, since the 1980s, has been subjected, on the specific initiative of the Theatre Society, to an architectural constraint by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and is therefore not subject to change of use, which moreover they do not believe are the intentions of the new buyers. The Theatre Society will continue to carry out its cultural mission at the service of the community in the ways and times that we will not fail to make known in the coming days.”

The case is also being closely followed by the mayor of Amelia, Laura Pernazza (center-right civic list), who hopes for an intervention by MiBACT. “With much regret,” she wrote on her Facebook page, “I learned of the auction of the Amelia Theater: yes indeed I hoped that no one would participate and then perhaps face a private negotiation with the creditor bank. I had just in these days contacts with the Bank so that the sale of the theater could be averted, the request for postponement submitted by it to the Court was aimed at this but unfortunately it was not accepted by the Delegated Judge. This morning I will send directly to Minister Franceschini our appeal for the ministry to exercise the right of first refusal. I have made contact with the (provisional) adjudicator of the property and will meet with him next week. I will keep you updated.”
