A violent 6.3-magnitude earthquake struckAfghanistan in the night of Nov. 2 to 3, causing casualties and damage. According to initial estimates released by local authorities, the quake left at least 20 people dead and about three hundred injured in the Mazar-e Sharif city area.
Among the affected sites is the famous Blue Mosque of Mazar-i-Sharif, one of the country’s most important monuments, dating back to the 15th century and renowned for its spectacular brightly colored tiles. The religious complex, a pilgrimage destination for many Afghan Muslims, is traditionally believed to hold the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the first Shiite imam.
Images released after the quake show visible damage to the building: some stones came loose, ending up on the floor of the mosque, particularly in the minaret area, where cracks and falling stone fragments are evident.
