Palermo, David Bowie in one hundred shots. The friendship between the White Duke and Sukita

In Palermo, Palazzo Sant'Elia is hosting the photo exhibition Heroes - Bowie by Sukita from October 10, 2020.

From October 10, 2020, to January 31, 2021, Palazzo Sant’Elia in Palermo is hosting one hundred shots depicting David Bowie for a photography exhibition entitled Heroes - Bowie by Sukita.

These are shots, some exhibited as national premieres, taken by Japanese master Masayoshi Sukita, probably the most important photographer with whom Bowie ever worked.

The exhibition is promoted and organized by OEO Firenze Art and Le Nozze di Figaro with Fondazione Sant’Elia, and is curated by Ono Arte Contemporanea; under the patronage of the City of Palermo and the Metropolitan City of Palermo. The aim is to trace the association between the pop legend and the photographer: their collaboration began in 1972, when Sukita arrived in London to immortalize Marc Bolan and T-Rex and, although he did not know David Bowie, decided to go to one of his concerts because he was irresistibly attracted by the poster promoting him; a poster that depicted him with one leg raised, on a black background. The two met through stylist Yasuko Takahashi, and Bowie’s manager arranged a shoot. Bowie is thunderstruck by Sukita’s style, and although the shoot proceeds in complete silence due to the language barrier, something clicks between the two, a common feeling based on continued artistic pursuit that leads to the birth of a professional and human relationship that would last until Bowie’s passing in 2016.
