A decree by Culture Minister Dario Franceschini appointed the members of the Ministry of Culture’sObservatory forGender Equality, which will thus begin its work. The Observatory had been established with the update of the Franceschini reform last June (when the four new autonomous museums were also created, namely the Museum of Digital Art, Sepino Archaeological Park, Cerveteri and Tarquinia Archaeological Park, and the National Art Gallery of Siena, as well as the Special Superintendence for the PNRR).This body will have advisory and support tasks in the development of policies for gender equality in the areas under the ministry’s jurisdiction.

LOsservatory is composed of fifteen members, identified by the MiC as experts in gender policies and representatives of the Ministry’s areas of expertise. In addition to providing advice and support, the members will also do research and monitoring in the Ministry’s areas of expertise. LOsservatory will also have to identify and propose good practices, promote training, knowledge and culture of equal opportunities. Members will serve for three years and may be renewed. Participation in the activities of theObservatory does not entitle to compensation, participation fees, allowances of any kind.

The coordinator of the Observatory will be Celeste Costantino, an activist with a past as an MP (during the 17th legislature, when she was elected with SEL in the Piedmont I constituency and then moved to Sinistra Italiana and, from 2019, to the PD). The members are ballerina Eleonora Abbagnato, actor Stefano Accorsi, media and cultural policy expert Flavia Barca, actresses Maria Pia Calzone and Cristiana Capotondi, director Cristina Comencini, Italian Publishers Association president Ricardo Franco Levi, statistician Linda Laura Sabbadini, essayist and head of the League’s Integration Department Souad Sbai, and external relations manager of the Fondazione Musica per Roma Berta Maria Zezza. These names are joined by MiC general directors of Cinema and Audiovisual, Contemporary Creativity, Museums and Performing Arts, namely Nicola Borrelli, Onofrio Cutaia, Massimo Osanna and Antonio Parente, respectively.
