U.S.-based ARTnews magazine, one of the world’s longest-running art publications, founded in 1902, is landing in Europe for the first time and choosingItaly as its starting point. ARTnews Italia is part of the publishing group Urban Vision Group, which wants to strengthen its ambition to become the first “urban” publishing hub internationally. The project was born from the encounter between Urban Vision Group’s experience in building an innovative publishing network and the cultural heritage and editorial expertise of theIstituto dell’Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani. Urban Vision Group has developed over the years a system capable of bringing stories, visions and content outside traditional channels, transforming cities into platforms for shared storytelling thanks to a network of screens occupying streets and squares. Treccani, for its part, will lead the editorial staff of ARTnews Italia. Editor in chief of the new title will be Massimo Bray, former minister of culture and current director general of the Italian Encyclopedia Institute.
From this collaboration takes shape a magazine that aims to be a window on the present and a tool for reading the contemporary art scene from a perspective that is at once Italian, European and international. ARTnews Italia was created with the aim of telling the story of the art of our time through unpublished content, interviews, critical analysis and in-depth coverage of collections, exhibitions and protagonists of the art system. The first issue arrives on newsstands starting in January in print format with a quarterly periodicity and will be accompanied by an online presence that extends the editorial project to digital. ARTnews Italia will publish a selection of content from the international edition alongside original contributions dedicated to the Italian and European art scene. The new editorial productions focus on interviews, in-depth coverage of public and private collections, analysis of exhibitions, and reflections by scholars and critics, with the intention of investigating our country’s contemporary art system in constant dialogue with the global context.
The publishing project is developed in a plurality of forms and channels. In addition to the print magazine and digital platform, ARTnews Italia lives on social media, through dedicated newsletters and thanks to a structured collaboration with Treccani. A distinctive element is the use of Urban Vision Group’s Digital Out of Home network, which enables the dissemination of quality content in public space, transforming cultural communication into a collective and shared experience. In this vision, art and critical thinking leave the traditional places of fruition to meet a wider audience, becoming part of the urban fabric.
The first issue of ARTnews Italia features a cover commissioned from Marcello Maloberti. Inside this first issue will find space for contributions that clearly outline the horizon of the new Italian edition. From the U.S. editorial office comes an intervention by Maximilíano Durón dedicated to the future of collecting. Andrea Viliani, director of the Museum of Civilizations, offers a reflection on the contemporary nature of Italian cultural heritage. Andy Battaglia, executive editor of ARTnews, signs a conversation with Solana Chehtman of the Joan Mitchell Foundation and gallerist Chris Sharp, focusing on the importance of art legacy management. Sara Mondini, art historian and lecturer, on the other hand, delves into the new Saudi art ecosystem, offering a glimpse into one of the most dynamic areas of the international cultural scene.
“With ARTnews Italia,” says Luca Martinotti, CEO Urban Entertainment, “Urban Vision Entertainment expands its offer in an important sector for Italy: art. We strongly believe in this historic title, which has been able to reinvent itself over the years, and with this first issue we courageously face the challenge of entering a complex world, bringing the publication to Europe for the first time. Thanks to this new launch, we aim to make the world of Urban Entertainment more and more transversal, activating virtuous collaborations between editorial, marketing and commercial divisions, for a synergy that can only be positive.”
“The collaboration we have started with ARTnews,” says Massimo Bray, Editor-in-Chief of ARTnews Italia, “is in line with the mission of Treccani, which has always been committed to the promotion and dissemination of Italy’s cultural and artistic heritage. The editorial initiatives and cultural projects we have developed over the years, as well as the exhibition space dedicated to art inside our headquarters, testify to the importance we attribute to this sector and its ability to express and narrate our identity. With ARTnews Italia, this commitment finds a new and significant way of expression, capable of enhancing Italian art not only at the national level but also abroad, and of constituting an authoritative and essential observatory on the dynamics of contemporary art, realized in collaboration with the exceptional multimedia expertise of Urban Vision Group.”
