Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana becomes a comic book

Cavalleria Rusticana, Pietro Mascagni's most famous opera, becomes a comic book: the initiative is by Sillabe and Opera Laboratori, which are launching it for the start of the 2022-2023 opera season at Livorno's Teatro Goldoni.

On the occasion of the inauguration of the 2022-2023 opera season of the Goldoni Theater Foundation in Livorno with the staging of Pietro Mascagni’s opera princeps, Cavalleria rusticana, as part of the prestigious Mascagni Festival, the publishing house Sillabe and Opera Laboratori present to the public the new publishing series dedicated to comics and opera: “ComicsOpera.” The initiative was born from the collaboration with Teatro Goldoni and the Mascagni Festival and under the patronage of the Pietro Mascagni Promoting Committee.

The idea of this new series (which will be promoted and distributed in the bookstores and bookshops of the most important Italian museums) is part of both the path of research and constant renewal of cultural initiatives that have always been at the center of the activities of Sillabe and Opera Laboratori, and the social and educational path that the Goldoni Theater Foundation has been encouraging for some time in the city of Livorno and nationally.

Comics in particular allow young people to facilitate the understanding of artistic expressions, to promote the development of cognitive and communicative skills, and to strengthen relations between the world of youth and adults, which is sometimes too “serious.” Instead, comics is intuitive, motivating, inclusive, and familiar. It is a way to bring young people closer to music and opera and, at the same time, make the latter accessible to those with a lesser experiential background.

Therefore, it will be possible from Aug. 30 for youngsters to read the story of "Cavalleria rusticana a fumetti,“ whose libretto was adapted by the famous ”mascagnano“ Mario Menicagli through the drawings of Astrid Lucchesi, a rising star of Italian illustration who grew up in the Comics School in Florence. Tuscan by birth and education, Astrid attended the Artistic/Musical High School ”A Passaglia“ (Lucca) and later the Comics School of Florence. She worked as an illustrator through the DeAgostini Scuola publishing house. She currently collaborates with the Kleiner Flug publishing house and teaches History of Art to children at the ”Salotti" civic school.

An editorial and educational project for which heartfelt thanks for the prompt cooperation and future dissemination certainly goes to Emanuele Gamba, artistic director of the Goldoni Theater Foundation, and Marco Voleri, artistic director of the Mascagni Festival, favorable supporters of the project from the beginning.
