New lighting for Piero della Francesca ’s masterpiece kept in the medieval village of Monterchi: the Madonna del Parto. Now the work can be admired by all visitors in its splendid colors and appreciating every detail thanks to the intervention of iGuzzini Illuminazione.

“For a work of art, adequate lighting is fundamental,” commented Gabriele Mazzi, director of the Madonna del Parto Museum, “and in this context, where the image of Piero della Francesca has regained vigor with the restoration work of the early 1990s, it is very urgent to allow a better view of the work, without the shadows caused by the old system that have become unsustainable. The need for there to be the best conditions to appreciate the work is the starting point for an enhancement that, as far as I am concerned, will have the Madonna del Parto, its context and historical-artistic arguments at its center.”

The previous lighting was dated 1993, at the time of the last restoration, and by then presented problems for proper viewing of the work.

“We are truly thrilled to have contributed to the conservation and enhancement of the magnum opus of a master of exceptional lighting sensitivity,” added Cristiano Venturini, CEO of iGuzzini. “With this project we continue our commitment to the research and development of solutions capable of enhancing places of great spiritual, artistic and cultural value, as the Madonna del Parto by Piero della Francesca in Monterchi is a very high example.”

A masterpiece by Piero della Francesca created between about 1450 and 1475 (the precise date is not well known), the Madonna del Parto is preserved in the Museo della Madonna del Parto, a museum venue named after the painting located in the small town of Monterchi, in the province of Arezzo. It was originally in the church of Santa Maria di Momentana, and we know that the fresco was finished in just seven days of work. The Madonna is pregnant and two angels, symmetrical to each other, pull back the curtain to show her. It is a solemn moment, but Our Lady mitigates this solemnity by turning her gaze downward and touching her belly with her hand.
