Amalfi’s oldest cloister , that of the Capuchin monastery, has been restored and is now the site of an accommodation facility, theAnantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel. Located just a 10-minute walk from the center of Amalfi, the ancient, 13th-century building retains its distinctive historical features intact, including a striking Baroque church with a marble altar and majolica floor. The building had already been recovered to allow the hotel to be established: the original façade has been preserved in its materials and colors, while the interiors, designed with natural materials such as woods, leathers, natural fibers and precious metals, are designed to reflect the distinctive luxury of the Anantara brand.
This year, in collaboration with the Municipality of Amalfi led by Mayor Daniele Milano and under the supervision of the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the provinces of Salerno and Avellino, the Anantara Convento di Amalfi has promoted a project to restore the cloister dating back to 1223. The work, recently completed thanks to the expertise of the firm Daedalus Restauri of Salerno, saw the first phase focus on the restoration of archaeological artifacts and theoldest fresco depicting the city of Amalfi, with Jesus appearing to St. Peter on Lake Tiberias, superimposed with floral decorations, located on the wall to the left of the entrance portal to the church, and placed above a plaster with floral decorations.
With this project, Anantara Convent wants to demonstrate its strong commitment to the preservation of local cultural and historical heritage. In addition to the historical and artistic aspects, Anantara Convento di Amalfi offers unique experiences guided by local experts. Friar Marcus, a central figure at the convent and a Franciscan friar, makes himself available to share the monastic and spiritual history of the place, taking visitors on a journey through the convent, church and cloister. His presence is meant to embody the hotel’s ongoing commitment to bringing alive the thousand-year history that animates this unique place.
“I am happy and proud,” says Estelle Vassallo, General Manager of Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel, “to promote this important project to enhance the cloister of the Convent, which is perfectly in line with the values of the Anantara brand that places strong emphasis on protecting the historical and cultural heritage of the hospitality facilities in which it is located. Anantara Convento di Amalfi is a virtuous example of this: a structure of great charm is able to restore value and beauty to the area while offering its guests an all-Italian experience.”
“One is ecstatic to admire this extraordinary achievement!” says Daniele Milano, Mayor of Amalfi. “We are grateful to Anantara Convento di Amalfi Grand Hotel for carrying out restoration work on important cultural assets owned by the municipality, thus espousing a precise valorization strategy initiated by our Administration. Over the past 9 years, in fact, there are numerous assets that have already undergone restoration: the fountain of St. Andrew, the bronze statue of Flavio Gioia, the archaeological finds preserved in the Arsenal, the majolica panel of the Marina Gate, the gonfalons of the historical procession of the Ancient Maritime Republic. Significant elements in which the history of Amalfi, which has always been a crossroads of peoples and cultures, comes alive again.”
