Inside the frescoes of the Brancacci Chapel with virtual reality: previewed BrancacciPOV

Previewed the BrancacciPOV prototype: a virtual reality visit inside the Brancacci Chapel frescoes. The prototype is part of the enhancement project coordinated by CNR ISPC.

Yesterday morning, the Brancacci Point Of View prototype, a virtual tour inside the frescoes of the Brancacci Chapel in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence, was unveiled for the first time at tourismA - Archaeology and Cultural Tourism Exhibition.

Accompanied by a guide, but staying comfortably at home, or sitting in a classroom, or even in the hall of a museum, and using your smartphone, pc or even virtual reality visor, you will be able to travel to discover the protagonists, events and curiosities that contributed to the creation of the masterpiece by Masolino, Masaccio and Filippino Lippi.

BrancacciPOV is part of the Brancacci Chapel Enhancement Project, coordinated by the CNR ISPC, through the DHiLab (Digital Heritage Innovation Lab) team, with the collaboration of the City of Florence, with advice from the Opificio delle Pietre Dure and the Soprintendenza Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the metropolitan city of Florence and the provinces of Pistoia and Prato, and thanks to funding from Friends of Florence and the Jay Pritzker Foundation.

“The CNR Institute of Cultural Heritage Sciences,” commented Costanza Miliani, CNR ISPC director, "is studying digital tools that connect cultural heritage with society through knowledge, emotion and social cohesion. The project that is being presented is a research prototype that proposes to solve extremely complex cultural and social issues, such as the priority given to the digital at the expense of physicality and human relations, or such as the disaffection of citizens toward our culture and history, which results in a lack of perception of the importance that preservation and protection should have. In fact, the institute is also involved in the diagnostic worksite of the Brancacci Chapel, which was the starting point of the BrancacciPOV Project."

“This is a virtual visit to a Renaissance jewel located in the Carmine Church in Florence,” stressed Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Culture of the City of Florence Alessia Bettini. “The restoration operations of the Brancacci Chapel had become a unique opportunity to see wonderful works up close. Now with this project there is a further opportunity to rediscover this masterpiece. We are really proud that the Brancacci is at the center of this cutting-edge initiative that proposes a new way of enjoying art and culture.”
