TheAmorino Lubomirski, one of the most significant plaster casts housed in the Gypsotheca in Possagno, made by Antonio Canova in 1785, will be restored thanks to the support of the Municipality of Treviso. The initiative stems from the ongoing dialogue between the Treviso Civic Museums and the Antonio Canova Gypsotheca Museum in Possagno, which have promoted loans and joint projects over the years.
The restoration will be carried out by the company Passarella of Padua, under the supervision of the Gypsotheca and the Soprintendenza. It is not just a technical intervention, but a gesture of shared responsibility toward the heritage that Canova consigned to collective memory.
Created in 1785, theLubomirski Cupid depicts young Prince Henryk Lubomirski in the guise of Cupid. The work was commissioned by Princess Elżbieta Czartoryski Lubomirska, who welcomed the boy as a son during her Grand Tour to Italy. It is a refined allegory, weaving together family affections, references to neoclassical culture, and unmistakable Canova grace. The story of the Amorino also bears the marks of time and history: struck during World War I, it was the subject of an initial conservation operation in 2013. The new restoration will now allow it to be restored to legibility and stability, ensuring its protection for future generations
As pointed out by the director of the Gypsotheca Antonio Canova Museum in Possagno Moira Mascotto, the collaboration between institutions is “an act of care towards a Canova masterpiece, but also a concrete example of how dialogue between museums can translate into virtuous and lasting actions, for the benefit of the community.”
