Another 300 thousand euros to continue the excavation of the newly discovered Basilica of Vitruvius in Piazza Andrea Costa in Fano. The joint work between the city administration and the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the Provinces of Ancona and Pesaro and Urbino marks a new step forward in the investigation and enhancement of one of the most significant archaeological finds in recent years.
The agreement, which matured at the end of an institutional confrontation developed in recent weeks, allows for the release of a total allocation of 300 thousand euros and guarantees continuity of excavation activities starting next month. The resources will be divided equally: 150 thousand euros to be borne by the Ministry of Culture, through the Superintendency, and another 150 thousand euros to be borne by the City of Fano, through the refinancing of the work in Piazza Andrea Costa. This is a decisive step in order not to interrupt the archaeological investigations and to further deepen the research in the area of the find.
Fano Mayor Luca Serfilippi emphasized the importance of the news, pointing out that the main knot was the economic coverage needed to give continuity to the excavations. “Thanks to a joint effort between the municipality and the Ministry of Culture, we can move forward,” the first citizen said. There are findings of great importance in the area behind the Basilica as well, and we have decided to continue in order to bring out additional elements of extraordinary value."
The project is not limited to the immediate funding of field operations. In fact, in parallel, interlocutions with the Marche Region and the Ministry are continuing. Regional President Francesco Acquaroli has already expressed interest in and support for operations to enhance the site, opening up the possibility of broader involvement of territorial institutions. In the coming weeks, work will be done on the definition of an institutional control room and a technical table that, in addition to public bodies, will involve non-institutional subjects such as study centers, universities, foundations and all the actors willing to contribute to the promotion and enhancement of the Basilica of Vitruvius and other archaeological remains in the city.
The mayor wanted to explicitly thank Superintendent Andrea Pessina and officials Ilaria Rossetti and Stefano Finocchi, emphasizing the climate of collaboration and great teamwork that has characterized the journey so far and will continue in the next operational phases. According to Serfilippi, the Vitruvian Basilica represents an extraordinary find that has propelled Fano onto the international stage, as it would be the only building designed and built by Vitruvius, a central figure in Roman architecture and author of the famous treatise De Architectura.
For his part, Superintendent Andrea Pessina remarked that “The direct support of the MiC testifies to the absolute scientific relevance of the Fano context and takes advantage of the synergy with the Municipal Administration, an indispensable collaboration to deal with the complexity of this exceptional discovery in a coordinated and shared manner. The recent and fruitful meeting in Rome with Fabrizio Magani, Director General of Archaeology Fine Arts and Landscape, and the senior executive Luigi La Rocca, top management of the MiC, confirms the Ministry’s full willingness and active support for the upcoming survey initiatives.”
The intervention is part of a broader framework that also concerns the urban redevelopment of Piazza Andrea Costa. In fact, the city administration is committed to safeguarding funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP), amounting to 1.5 million euros, earmarked for the redevelopment of the square. A final go-ahead is awaited from the Ministry of the Interior’s steering committee for the work that has already been carried out, a step that is crucial to ensure the overall resilience of the intervention.
In the meantime, work will continue in the coming weeks on the part of the square already completed, with the installation of furniture and finishes. Further updates will be provided as the project enters its later stages, in parallel with the continuation of archaeological excavations.
