Resources have arrived to finish the excavation of the Volterra Amphitheater, one of the most important archaeological discoveries of recent years worldwide, which we have reported on several times on these pages as well. In fact, the Ministry of Culture has provided an allocation of 4.5 million euros that will allow the work to be completed to bring to light the large Roman amphitheater that housed almost ten thousand spectators and was unexpectedly discovered in 2015 during some work to restore a waterway. This was announced by the Municipality of Volterra. These are resources that had been promised by Minister Dario Franceschini during his visit to Tuscany last November.
“I would like to thank Minister Dario Franceschini, Superintendent Valerio Tesi and his predecessor, Dr. Esmeralda Valente,” says Elena Sorge, the archaeologist who heads the excavation. “It is a figure that reassures us. We still expect great things from this excavation, and we have to consider that, at the moment, the worst-preserved part has emerged.”
“The allocation from the Ministry of Culture,” say Volterra Mayor Giacomo Santi and Culture Councillor Dario Danti, “is a very important recognition for Volterra and for our entire territory. It is the result of the great work done by all public bodies, Superintendence, Municipality and Region in the first place, and private individuals who in recent years have invested resources and intelligence for the Roman amphitheater. Thanks to Minister Franceschi, who with his visit wanted in person to consolidate the excavation of this archaeological asset that can now be completed. Great things can be achieved with culture; this is the clearest demonstration of that.”
