Nicola Carrino, artist and Academician of St. Luke's, has passed away at the age of 86.

One of the most important sculptors of recent times, Nicola Carrino, has passed away at the age of 86: the artist left at his home-studio in Rome, where he had lived for more than 50 years. Born in Taranto in 1932, Nicola Carrino had moved to Rome in 1962, and in the capital he joined Gruppo Uno, and immediately began his activity as an experimental sculptor who made his works with materials such as iron, steel, and industrial objects. Among his leading research were the Transformable Constructives, sculptures resulting from the modulation of iron or steel elements. These are works endowed with a strong architectural sense and animated by the ability to give rise to many free or programmed relationships, even in relation to the landscape (in fact, many of his installations have been exhibited outdoors).

He had begun his career at a very young age: the first group exhibition in which he participated was in 1952, when he was in his twenties, while his first solo show was mounted six years later, in 1958. During his career he participated in four Venice Biennales (1966, 1970, 1976, 1986), four Rome Quadrennials (1965, 1973, 1986, 1999), two São Paulo Biennales in Brazil (1971 and 1979) and the 1967 Biellane in Paris. His works can be found in museums and foundations such as the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, the MART in Rovereto, the Experimental Museum of Contemporary Art in Turin, the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation in Milan, and the Sammlung Dierichs of the Ruhr-Universität in Bochum. A lecturer at several Fine Arts Academies, he was also, since 1993, a member of theAccademia di San Luca, of which he was president between 2009 and 2010.
