Murano Illumina il Mondo brings twelve new artist chandeliers to St. Mark's Square

From November 21, 2025 to March 1, 2026, the third edition of Murano Illumina il Mondo will transform St. Mark's Square into an outdoor exhibition space with twelve artist chandeliers made in collaboration with Murano furnaces. The project is promoted by the City of Venice and The Venice Glass Week.

Murano Illumina il Mondo returns to Venice with its third edition and brings attention back to Murano glassmaking through a project that combines contemporary art and traditional manufacturing. From November 21, 2025 to March 1, 2026, Piazza San Marco will become an open-air gallery thanks to twelve artist chandeliers installed under the Procuratie Vecchie. The official lighting will take place on the evening of November 22, while the works will already be visible from the previous day, thus inaugurating a path that aims to enhance the role of the furnaces as active centers of research.

The project also includes a cultural mediation activity curated by students from the Abate Zanetti School, who will be present in St. Mark’s Square from December to provide information to the public and illustrate the contents of the initiative. The school’s participation underscores the intention to strengthen the link between training, craftsmanship and new creative languages, involving young people in a context of enhancing the glassmaking tradition. From November 24, an information corner will also be active at the entrance to the Bevilacqua La Masa Foundation Gallery, also in St. Mark’s Square. The initiative is promoted by the City of Venice and The Venice Glass Week, with the economic support of Pentagram Stiftung and the Venice Rovigo Chamber of Commerce through the Azienda Speciale Opportunità e Mercati. The project thus confirms a network of institutions and local entities committed to the protection and promotion of glass culture.

The twelve chandeliers presented in this edition are the result of collaborations between international artists and designers and some of Murano’s best-known furnaces. Each author was invited to reinterpret the chandelier as a symbolic object of Venetian tradition, transforming it into a site-specific work designed to dialogue with the architectural setting of St. Mark’s Square. The initiative emphasizes continuity between ancient knowledge and contemporary experimentation, with the aim of reaffirming Murano as a place of cultural as well as craft production.

This year’s collaborations include Lucio Bubacco with Vetreria 3 Artistico Lampadari, Michela Cattaicon Simone Cenedese, Irene Cattaneo with Lavorazioni artistiche di Fabiano Amadi, F. Taylor Colantonio withSignorettoLampadari in collaboration with Salvadore, Simone Crestani and Joana Vasconcelos with Berengo Studio,Massimo Micheluzzi with Vetreria Anfora, Chahan Minassian with Nicola Moretti Murano, Luca Nichettowith Barovier&Toso, Christian Pellizzari with Salviati, Eros Raffael with Abate Zanetti School, and Ru Xiao Fancon Effetre and Seguso Gianni. The variety of collaborations shows the desire to bring together heterogeneous approaches, backgrounds and artistic paths, highlighting the versatility of glass as an expressive material. With this third edition, Murano Illumina il Mondo continues its attempt to present Murano glass as an area where tradition and innovation coexist, involving established artists, designers and master glassmakers in a shared process. St. Mark’s Square thus becomes a place where the city’s history meets new interpretations, offering visitors a path that combines memory, technique and aesthetic research.
