Padua, the former Church of St. Agnes will become a contemporary art center after restoration

The former Church of St. Agnes in Padua will become the headquarters of the Alberto Peruzzo Foundation and will host contemporary art. Meanwhile, the Ante-Poster project has kicked off through which six artists will narrate the ongoing restoration process.

It kicked off on December 1, with a poster by artist Ignacio Uriarte, the Ante-Poster project that for about ten months, thanks to the works of six artists (Serena Fineschi, Susanne Kutter, Marc Nagtzaam, Giulia Siviero and Esther Stocker), will accompany the latest restoration work on the Church of St. Agnes in Padua, supported since 2013 by the Alberto Peruzzo Foundation.

Posters created by the artists in order to tell the public about the ongoing restoration process, which will be completed in the spring of 2022, will then be displayed on the windows of what will be the Foundation’s bookshop spaces. Approximately every two months, a new poster designed specifically for the project will be posted, and all works will then be printed on fine art paper in a limited edition of 100, of artist’s papers. The initiative aims to initiate a direct relationship with the community, in dialogue with the church’s important historical and architectural recovery project.

The Ante-Poster project was born from the collaboration with the art direction and graphic design studio Multiplo. The initiative of the Alberto Peruzzo Foundation is part of its institutional mission, aimed at the recovery, preservation and enhancement of the historical and artistic heritage of the territory, which is combined with the contribution to the promotion and dissemination of contemporary art.

The church of St. Agnes is among the oldest in Padua and, upon completion of the work, will be returned to the public by the Foundation, which will make it a place of culture and dialogue with contemporary art: the nave will be a space dedicated to temporary installations, while the sacristy will become an exhibition space for the Foundation’s permanent collection, which includes works by Picasso, Balla, De Chirico, Dubuffet, Vedova, Schifano, Haring, Fontana and Warhol, among others. Below the ground floor, apermanent historical area will collect a series of artifacts found during restoration, including fresco fragments from the 14th century, and some sepulchres, while the terrace above the sacristy will host large sculptures and events.
