Scheduled to take place today, February 15, at Sotheby’s is the second edition of Erotic : Passion & Desire, the major auction of erotic art that is being replicated in 2018 given the great success of last year, which netted the British house more than five million pounds. This year, pin-up Dita von Teese, the greatest performer of the burlesque genre, has been called upon to present some of the lots that will go on sale.
Ninety works will be offered for sale, with a total estimate of about 3.8 million pounds. These are works that actually cover the entire history of art reaching up to the present day. From works of art from classical antiquity to photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton and Chris Levine, Sotheby’s offers a journey through erotic art from all centuries. Highlights include a Blue Venus</em<> by Yves Klein, a stunning Frine by Francesco Barzaghi estimated at between £400,000 and £600,000 (the highest estimate of those in the auction), drawings by Gustav Klimt, a neon sign by Tracey Emin, erotic drawings by Pablo Picasso, a nude by Henri Matisse. Also, a Venus and Adonis by Jacopo Amigoni (estimated between £300,000 and £500,000), photographs by Andy Warhol, a group of works by Terry Rodgers, a rare cover of Playboy issue No. 1 (from 1953, estimated between £3,000 and £5,000), photographs by Nobuyoshi Araki, works by Georg Grosz.
