An international conference in Livorno on the history of Modigliani as a Leghorn Jew

On January 22 and 23, 2020, an international conference will be held in Livorno on the family history of Modigliani's Jewish Livorno.

On Jan. 22 and 23, 2020, an international conference, titled Modigliani the Leghorn Jew: Family History and the Formation of a Genius, will be held at the Provincial Museum of Natural History in Livorno, Italy, and will be attended by scholars and researchers from universities and research institutes from Italy, France, Israel and the United States.

The event, which will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., is part of the initiatives organized by the City of Livorno to mark the centenary of Amedeo Modigliani’s death. In fact, until February 16, 2020, the exhibition Modigliani and the Montparnasse Adventure is underway at the Livorno City Museum. Masterpieces from the Netter and Alexandre Collections.

Conceived by theRestellini Institute in Paris with the scientific collaboration of Paolo Edoardo Fornaciari, the conference aims to open a focus on Amedeo Modigliani’s education in the first fifteen years of his existence, as a Jewish Liv ornese educated and raised in the Livorno community.

It is therefore intended to investigate and deepen, more than the painter Modigliani, the young Amedeo known as “Dedo” (as a boy he was called that in the family) before Modì (the Parisian painter), focusing on the environment that shaped him, with particular attention to the influence of the Livorno cabbalist theologian Elia Benamozegh.

A session of the conference will also be devoted to a general reflection on the relationship between art and Judaism.

The event is free to attend and will conclude with guided tours of the artist’s sites.
