Brescia, street artist Luca Font's color subway arrives. It is a traveling work

For the 10th anniversary of the Brescia subway and on the occasion of Bergamo Brescia Capital of Culture 2023, street art crosses the city aboard a train signed Luca Font and a depot is transformed into 400 square meters of murals.

Brescia becomes Metro d’Autore and traveling artwork with CONNECTIONS, the new artistic incursion of street artist Luca Font who, for the 10th anniversary of the Brescia metro, transforms a part of the depot in Via Magnolini into 400 square meters of murals and, for the first time in Italy, an entire metro train into unprecedented moving canvases, a traveling art convoy that crosses the city.

On the occasion of 10 years since its inauguration on the occasion of Bergamo Brescia Capital of Culture 2023, the Brescia metro thus becomes a real author’s metro, bringing together sustainable mobility (with its 18 million km traveled it has saved 55 million kg of CO2) and beauty, confirming a choice relationship with contemporary art (also present in some of the main stations). Realized in Luca Font’s unmistakable style, with its 400 square meters of surface area, Connessioni tells about imaginary urban landscapes, but it is much more than a simple decoration: in fact, it represents a metaphor of the journey on the Brescia light rail, while conveying the values of sustainability, dynamism and technology, which characterize this means of transport. Luca Font then invents an elegant iconic masking, to cut and shape the illustrative decoration that represents Brescia and its continuous mobility, through the dynamic and sinuous lines that describe the shape of an imaginary bird.

From the Brescia subway depot, the extension of Connections then departs: the carriages, also decorated with the replicated artwork, traverse the city, recounting the profiles and glimpses of the 2023 Capital of Culture, the Leonessa, the second largest municipality in Lombardy by population, whose monuments from the Roman and Lombard periods have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Luca Font is a pioneer of the minimal visual style, characterized by bright colors and visual impact, which draws its roots in the aesthetics of great masters such as Depero. He is considered one of the leading exponents of the graffiti and street art scene in Italy and around the world, thanks to his ability to create works of art that combine the visual language of contemporary art with the energy of urban culture. Working between his Milan studio and the rest of the world, Luca Font has gained wide popularity for his ability to create visually striking artworks with a strong cultural message.

Connessioni, curated by Emotitech startup dedicated to the creation of innovative digital projects that combine creativity, experiential science and technology, is among the initiatives of Brescia Bergamo Capital of Culture 2023 and was created at the initiative of Brescia Mobility and thanks to BCC Brescia. It was March 2, 2013 when the Brescia metro was inaugurated in the presence of thousands of citizens. From 2013 to 2023, the Brescia metro has carried 150 million passengers traveling nearly 18 million kilometers and making more than 1 million trips. This is an important achievement, which has saved about 55 million kg of CO2 in 10 years. Thanks to the metro, the number of passengers using the entire public transport system in Brescia has grown steadily, demonstrating the effectiveness of the designed intermodal system: the increase in passengers was more than 40 percent on the entire public transport network, reaching 58 million in 2019, more than 16 million more than in 2012. Also in 2019, the metro alone carried nearly 19 million passengers.

“The choice to be a partner in this project,” says Ennio Zani, president of BCC Brescia, “is also driven by the recognition of common values and characters that BCCBrescia has always carried forward in its activities. The very name of the project, Connections, recalls the value of relationships that is part of BCCBrescia’s DNA and a distinctive element of our way of banking.” We are happy to contribute to an initiative designed for the territory and the people who live there, in line with our constant commitment to economic development and the common good to be handed down to future generations. We have always been concerned and concerned to support the various social, cultural and solidarity expressions that enrich and improve the daily lives of our people. On the occasion of Brescia Bergamo 2023, mobility takes on a sense of discovery and rediscovery of the beauty of our city. We are familiar with the impacts that climate change is causing within our communities and our lives. Being able to move with reduced environmental impact has become everyone’s responsibility, and in this BCCBrescia wants to live its role in a serious and active way, knowing full well that we need to create those conditions that will allow our young people (our future) to live in a more sustainable world. The project has this great intrinsic value, and this element convinced us right from the start."
