Children's Florence returns: this year's festival will be dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci

On April 12, 13 and 14, 2019, the Florence Children's Festival returns to the Tuscan capital: this year's edition will be dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci.

The city of Florence will host a new edition of the Firenze dei Bambini festival on April 12, 13 and 14, 2019. The festival designed for very young children, teens and their families will be dedicated this year to Leonardo da Vinci to celebrate the 500th anniversary of his death.

The figure of Leonardo has fascinated people of all times for his observations, insights, and innovative thinking, and the event Children’s Florence intends to bring the life and works of the great genius to children, teens and adults for an interpretation in a current and participatory key.
The festival will cover the entire Tuscan city and will be aimed on Friday at schools, and on Saturday and Sunday at families with children and young people from 0 to 12 years old. The scheduled initiatives will be free of charge, some with free access, others by reservation.

Activities for schools include educational and training projects and workshops curated by Indire; these include Leonardo and Minecraft, science workshops, building robotic machines, an en plein air painting workshop at the Horticulture Garden, and many other activities on flight, light and Leonardo’s inventions. Numerous classes from around the city will then be in the San Miniato al Monte square to fly their poems on paper airplanes.

Over the weekend hundreds of activities, workshops, initiatives and performances: on Friday, April 12 at 6 p.m. in the Salone dei Cinquecento there will be Leonardo and the sound machines, a participatory show to marvel and discover how musical instruments came into being, organized by the L. Cherubini Conservatory; on Saturday, April 13 at 6:30 p.m. at Palazzo Vecchio there will be Una sera con Leonardo. Questions and memories of when I was a child taken from the show Essere Leonardo da Vinci, an impossible interview by Massimiliano Finazzer Flory; the festival’s closing event, again in the Salone dei Cinquecento, with the unmissable Non è mai troppo tardi per cantare, a “record choir” curated by Venti Lucenti.

By popular demand, Sogni d’oro tra soffitti d’oro returns: the unique opportunity for children and parents to spend an unforgettable night in a sleeping bag in the Salone dei Cinquecento. Saturday 13 at 9 p.m. appointment for a special tour in the museum, then close your eyes in the company of the great characters of the Medici family. Finally, upon awakening, breakfast for all thanks to Fondaco Italia and Rigoni. Limited places, reservations required through the website firenzebambini.it

The festival will involve ten venues in the center and beyond: at Palazzo Vecchio the courtyards will be animated by games and activities, with space dedicated to very young children and an unusual “Leonardo lion”; in the Sala d’Arme a workshop to reinterpret the world’s most famous painting, the Mona Lisa; in the palace paths and activities on the Battle of Anghiari and the current exhibition Leonardo and Florence.
At the Cinema della Compagnia large screenings on Leonardo (including the recent RAI production) and thematic workshops; workshops at the Museo degli Innocenti and at theIstituto Geografico Militare with a focus on Leonardo’s ingenuity; at the Oblate readings and thematic workshops in the library spaces for children and young people and the installation on flight signed by Studio Azzurro, with numerous related activities.
At the Murate again a large installation, namely Leonardo’s cranes and construction machines made by ArtesMechanicae, with an invitation to participate in workshops on the subject, games and activities in the squares, a mural that will come to life with the famous artist Toxic, meetings with great thinkers and workshops with great artists at PAC.
At the Horticulture Garden paths and activities en plein air on the theme of nature, flora and fauna, animated readings and initiatives in the library, an orange garden to be discovered.
The Manifattura Tabacchi offers itself as an unprecedented location for activities and workshops for all ages and interests, from technology to art, science to theater, and performances staged in the courtyard.
The Thouar Library and the Leopoldine will present nonstop activities, installations and performances in the cloister, animated readings in the library, and the sound work of Francesco Pellegrino and Anita Barghigiani in the monumental hall.
