The fragment, dating from the early 14th century and detached in ancient times, comes from the interior wall of the ancient St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, demolished in 1610. It depicts two figures of saints long identified with St. Peter and St. Paul, but following restoration, which revealed valuable iconographic data, more likely to be identified with a holy bishop and a holy deacon. The work was exhibited, for the first time, on the occasion of the exhibition Giotto. Italy, held in Milan at Palazzo Reale as part of Expo 2015, from September 2, 2015 to January 10, 2016. This event was followed by its transfer to the Opificio delle Pietre Dure for restoration funded by the Rotary Club Milano Sempione and completed in October 2017.

In addition, a study day is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 9, to be held in the Altamura Room: open to scholars and the public subject to availability; reservations are not required. The day will conclude with a panel discussion with internationally renowned Giotto scholars.
