Ragusa Ibla's Baroque district enlivened by art sets dedicated to Sicilian culture

From Aug. 9 to Oct. 9, Ragusa Ibla's Baroque district will host six installations to reflect on typical Sicilian cultural themes.

From Aug. 9 to Oct. 9, the streets and squares of Ragusa Ibla will host six installations placed in six different places in the Baroque district: real art sets created on the occasion of Made in Sicily, a cultural event involving various Ragusan artists. The installations each propose a different theme, and visitors will be involved in a path that intends to reflect on typical themes of Sicilian culture.

The Made in Sicily project is curated by set designer Francesco Palazzolo. Photographer Toni Campo will exhibit some of his most famous shots, and designer Patrizia Amoddio, creator of art jewelry, will offer jewelry from the Cuturissi exhibition, photographed by Toni Campo.Ragusa Ibla’s six art sets will also host Cinzia Franzò’s art objects, Kristo Neziraj’s paintings, Danié’s bags (ancient Sicilian coffees), designer Renato Belluccia’s works and Leggio Colors’ design.

“We chose to exhibit outdoors,” commented Francesco Palazzolo, “to avoid possible gatherings and to ensure that the viewer can interact with the art installations at any time of the day. Each installation will also be associated with characteristic fragrant essences of our land. Everything will be accompanied by ancient Sicilian melodies and the voice of folk singer Rosa Balistreri.”

The first artistic set will be set up in the small square in front of the Church of the Most Holy Lord Found, close to the ancient Byzantine walls. Title is A fimmina cummannera, dedicated to Sicilian women. The set will be enriched by the flavor of carob and Sicilian melodies.

The second, Crozza (skull), will be set up at the entrance to the municipal villa and in the avenues of the gardens. The central theme will be the faces and heads of Moors installed on both sides at the entrance to the municipal gardens and along the tree-lined avenues. Again, the scents of Mediterranean essences and Sicilian music.

The third, titled Cuturissi? (Who told you?), will be set up in the alley on Giavante Street. The installations will be inspired by Sicilian traditions, with dried tomatoes “i ’nciappati,” on an ancient “buffetta” (the Sicilian kitchen table), juxtaposed with elements of design and painting: an ancient pupo, jewelry, colorful chairs.

The fourth artistic set will have the title I robbi stisi (The laundry hung out to dry): a photo shoot of ancient Sicilian costumes (kept in the museum in Mirto, in the province of Messina), worn by Sicilian girls, will offer images imprinted on white sheets stretched between the buildings of one of the most important streets in Ibla: via Pietro Novelli.

The fifth, Portami ccu tia (Take me with you): artistic proposals will be inspired by the door theme and set in a green space in the historic center. Old doors, salvaged from old dwellings, will be reinterpreted with creations by Francesco Palazzolo, Toni Campo and Kristo Neziraj.

The last one, Duluri (Grief), will enliven the spaces of Salita Specula, behind the Cathedral of St. George and will offer some images related to the theme of mourning. All photos will be in black and white.
