Roma Capitale dedicates a year of events to Pasolini for his centenary


Roma Capitale is dedicating a year of events, including screenings, meetings, exhibitions, and theatrical performances, to Pier Paolo Pasolini, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth.

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Pier Paolo Pasolini (Bologna, March 5, 1922), Roma Capitale is dedicating a year of events throughout the city to one of the greatest intellectuals of the 20th century: PPP100 - Roma Racconta Pasolini, including screenings, meetings, exhibitions, theatrical performances and much more, will be made possible thanks to the collaboration with the city’s main cultural institutions.

Screenings

The Casa del Cinema offers programming dedicated to an in-depth study of Pasolini the filmmaker. It will begin with Pasolini EXTRA, a festival organized in collaboration with CSC - Cineteca Nazionale that for five days, from March 9 to 13, will bring to the screen films, documentaries, and short films dedicated to Pasolini the documentarian, screenwriter and director. The screenings will be accompanied by meetings with personalities from the world of cinema such as David Grieco (March 9, 7:30 p.m.), Abel Ferrara (March 10, 7:30 p.m.) and Aurelio Grimaldi (March 12, 7:30 p.m.), as well as editorial presentations such as that of the new issue of Cabiria magazine, entirely dedicated to Pasolini (March 11, 6 p.m.), or the book Tutto Pasolini, by Piero Spila, Roberto Chiesi, Silvana Cirillo and Jean Gili (March 13, 6 p.m.). At the end of the Pasolinian year, again at Casa del Cinema, the director’s entire body of works will be screened in restored 35mm copies available thanks to the collaboration with Cinecittà.

The investigation into Pasolini as a filmmaker will then continue in the following months also thanks to the contribution of the Fondazione Cinema per Roma, which, before reserving a special section for him in the next edition of the Festa del Cinema, will offer in spring the screening of Emilio Marrese’s documentary Il giovane corsaro. Pasolini da Bologna, while in early summer a special section of the Video Essay Film Festival will be dedicated to Pasolini.

Exhibitions

The Casa del Cinema will offer from March 15 to April 15 a photography exhibition entitled The Orientals of Pier Paolo Pasolini. The Flower of a Thousand and One Nights. Roberto Villa’s photographic journey through Pasolini’s cinema.

Among the exhibitions planned in the city’s museums, Pasolini Pittore, at the Gallery of Modern Art from Oct. 14, focuses on the artist’s pictorial activity by contextualizing it within the history of twentieth-century art. The project Alfabeto Pasolini carried out by the Istituzione Sistema Biblioteche Centri Culturali in collaboration with the Cultural Association Doppiozero, includes starting March 5 twenty meetings spread in as many Libraries of Roma Capitale, held together by key words, such as Friends, Art, Cinema, Corsair, Criticism, Friuli, Greece, Mannerism, Death/Transfiguration, Homosexuality, Father/Mother, Suburbs/World, Petrolio, Poetry, Politics, Rome, Novels, Sacred, Theater, Television, through which the complexity of Pasolini’s literary, theatrical and cinematic activity will be told, embracing the multiple aspects of his work and biography.

The voices of writers and experts will contribute. From these encounters, open to all but aimed particularly at high school and college students, podcasts will be produced that will be available on the channels of Libraries of Rome and the online magazine Doppiozero.

Theatrical performances

In the fall at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome there will be Maria Callas and Pier Paolo Pasolini, which will tell the story of the special relationship between the intellectual and the Greek opera singer; at the beginning of the summer at the Teatro India, with the collaboration of the Accademia Nazionale d’Arte Drammatica “Silvio D’Amico” there will be a four-day show Omaggio a Pasolini by Giorgio Barberio Corsetti

Also, the show dedicated to the relationship between Pasolini and soccer, L’ala destra del Dio di cuoio. A Homage to Pasolini, directed by Luciano Melchionna, scheduled at Teatro Biblioteca Quarticciolo in May or the Divine Mimesis curated by Seven Cults Cultural Association, a play based on Pasolini’s unfinished work, staged in June in the summer arena of Teatro Tor Bella Monaca.

Also in June, curated by Teatro Villa Pamphilj, the event Che cosa sono le nuvole, Pasolini a Monteverde, by Andrea Satta, which also winds through the places inhabited by the artist between 1954 and 1963.

The Lido Theater and the Pasolini 100 working group will carry out several initiatives: from the performances Who is me, the unplayed game and Intervista impossibile a Pier Paolo Pasolini, with Nestor Saied and Alfredo Traversa, to the series of events as part of the Agora Festival; from the screening of the docu-film Fermata Pasolini by Alfredo Traversa, to the exhibition of posters and playbills of Pasolini’s films entitled Pasolini 100.
