Senigallia as a City of Photography: two exhibitions and a preview of the Photography Biennial

Once Upon a Time in Photography: Senigallia celebrates the first 150 years of photography with two exhibitions and a preview of the Photography Biennial.

Senigallia aims to establish itself as a City of Photography and presents for spring 2019 the event Once Upon a Time in Photography (April 18 to June 2, 2019), curated by Serge Plantureux with the collaboration of Francesca Bonetti and the support of the Marche Region and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Jesi. The initiative promises to be a preview of a true Photography Biennial scheduled from 2020.

The city is offering two exhibitions, Cavalli Ferroni Giacomelli. Unpublished Shots from the Senigallia Archives and Small Treasures of the 1800s. Marubbi, Naretti, Callotipi, Daguerreotypes and Variations. The first is held at the Palazzo del Duca and exhibits a series of unpublished works by three masters of local and international photography, selected by Plantureux himself from the archives of his heirs. The second is held at Palazzetto Baviera and is dedicated to the early stages of the history of photography, in a tale of peoples and distant lands through historical and original photographs, some previously unpublished, dating from the mid-19th to early 20th century, including Pietro Marubbi ’s Albanian series and Luigi Naretti’s colonial series. Also on display are daguerreotypes, callotypes and models by Count Minutoli, as well as European prints from the late 19th century. Both exhibitions are on view until June 2, 2019.

In addition, on May 2, 3 and 4, 2019, Senigallia will host lectures and meetings in an event spread throughout the historic center to tell the story of the first 150 years of photography and a fair on the main floor of Palazzetto Baviera, where gallery owners and antiquarians will exhibit analog works and those belonging to the pre-digital era.
