Soap bubbles come to the National Gallery of Umbria. Physically. For the exhibition on Bubbles in Art.

Program of side activities of the exhibition 'Soap Bubbles. Forms of utopia between vanitas, art and science' at the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia.

A rich program of collateral activities accompanies, at the National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia, the exhibition Soap Bubbles. Forms of Utopia between vanitas, art and science, curated by Michele Emmer and Marco Pierini and scheduled from March 16 to June 9, 2019. There will also be events that will bring soap bubbles, to which the exhibition is dedicated, physically inside the museum. Blowing soap bubbles, after all, has always been fun, but not only that. The value of soap bubbles, capable of combining art, science and fun, has prompted the National Gallery of Umbria to provide a series of collateral cultural activities for the duration of the exhibition: live shows and performances, guided tours, educational workshops for adults and children and thematic meetings will mark the entire period of soap bubbles in the Gallery. Below is the entire program of activities. For more information you can visit the National Gallery of Umbria website.

Guided tours: every weekend from March 23 to June 9.
On Saturdays, Discovering Soap Bubbles, for adults, at 6 p.m.: an art historical journey to discover the works on display, dedicated to the iconographic universe of Bubbles, which with unexpected frequency and uninterrupted continuity, runs from the 16th century to the present day. Symbol of the transience of human life, inspiration in the artistic composition of the Vanitas, scientific interest and physical involvement in contemporary architectural models, use in the world of design for prints and advertising posters, soap bubbles have been able to reach the present day without knowing periods of misfortune, knowing how to adapt to changing times and iconographic needs. Some visits will also be in English, given the presence of works on loan from leading national and international institutions. A scientific demonstration within the educational laboratory set up as part of the exhibition will also allow visitors to touch on some of the physical and mathematical aspects of the fragile and fluctuating soap sheets.

On Sunday, Playing with Soap Bubbles, for children, 5 p.m. Water, soap, blow maybe a little, and that universe of tiny colorful planets flew through the air again. And some bubbles lasted a long time without bursting and flew far away, who knows where they went? And each time they had all burst and some had flown far away invisible, the child would make more and more, dozens, hundreds of bubbles would fly.

Workshops for children
They are designed for two age groups. The first from ages 4 to 6: Children will be guided through the artistic journey of Soap Bubbles through an engaging fantasy tale (by in-house staff, Atlas Cultural Services and Sistema Museo), followed by an exploration of this magical world of transparencies (by Psiquadro). The second, for ages 7 to 11: a guided tour to the unexpected discovery of artistic works that have had soap bubbles as their theme since the 16th century, but also their fundamental role in 18th-century research on light refraction and colors,on later theories on minimal surfaces or on organic forms of aggregation of matter. In the educational workshop curated by Psiquadro, it will be possible to touch upon, through experiments and games, some of the chemical-physical phenomena related to soap sheets. The schedule: Sunday, March 31, 7-11 years; Sunday, April 7, 4-6 years; Sunday, April 14, 4-6 years; Sunday, April 28, 7-11 years; Sunday, May 5, 7-11 years; Sunday, April 12, 4-6 years; Sunday, April 19, 7-11 years; Sunday, June 2, 7-11 years. Educational activities will be organized by the staff of the National Gallery of Umbria in collaboration with Atlante Servizi Culturali Soc. Coop, Sistema Museo Soc. Coop. and Città del Sole and Associazione Siriparte.

Theatrical performance Experience by Pep Bou
First occasion of a fruitful collaboration with Teatro Stabile dell’Umbria and as part of the Rassegna “Smanie di Primavera,” on Tuesday, April 30 at 9 p.m., at Teatro Morlacchi in Perugia, Pep Bou will be on stage with his fascinating universe of soap bubbles. Pep Bou’s experiences take viewers on a journey in search of poetic dreams, using three simple but essential elements: soap, water and live music. The show is the product of nearly four decades of experimentation with theoretical and practical knowledge from the world of physics. The performance, with memorable touches, is an impressive demonstration of the constant research undertaken by this creator and alchemist in his workshop. An unprecedented synthesis of an audiovisual and theatrical language that has astounded and amazed audiences on all continents. A unique performance created by an eccentric and distinctive artist who has created his own stage language.

Bubbles and bubbles
One Thursday a month at 6 p.m.: a 40-minute tour of the “Soap Bubbles” exhibition that focuses on a selection of works representing different themes (Homo bulla est; the Dutch seventeenth century; the golden age of bubbles between art and science; soap bubbles in contemporary art and architecture) and encourages visitors to explore the exhibition on their own. Followed by a tasting of the Bubbles in collaboration with Scacciadiavoli Winery and T-Trane Record Store.

Cycle of meetings Soap Bubbles Insights.
To the fundamental role played by soap bubbles in the scientific field, starting from the 18th-century research on light refraction and colors, to the later ones about theories on minimal surfaces or organic forms of aggregation of matter, is dedicated a series of meetings in the teaching room on the 3rd floor of the National Gallery of Umbria, which includes contributions from mathematicians and scientists who have dedicated their studies to this topic. And again, soap bubbles in advertising posters, photographs and cinema, because the iconography of soap bubbles meets free and varied translations, now funny, now imaginative, without particular symbolism or speculation, sudden, fast and light as advertisements should be (and as soap bubbles are).

Encuentro in the Gallery
Saturday, May 4 at 12 noon, Nona’s Bubbles, Chilean writer Nona Fernandez, one of the inescapable voices of current Hispanic-American literature narrates a selection of the works on display.

Kidsbit in the Gallery
On Saturday June 8 and Sunday June 9, the collaboration with the Kidsbit Festival returns, dedicating this edition to Planet Earth: KIDSBIT CALLS EARTH! Interactive art installations, workshops, games and performances, many surprises also as part of the Soap Bubbles exhibition.

Accompanying the exhibition is the scientific catalog of the exhibition, edited by Michele Emmer and Marco Pierini, published by Silvana Editoriale, and the book Bubbles , Bu bbles edited by Michele Emmer, illustrated by Francesca Greco, published by Aguaplano. “Once upon a time there was a little boy, whose name was Akim, and while he was washing his hands, at a certain point he saw something he had never seen before. A small sphere was flying in the air in front of his eyes... it was flying and rotating in the air, that thing was acting as if it was almost alive, it was happy to fly here and there, and it was rising, rising.... And the story of the bubbles would continue.... Endlessly, without those ancient and very modern objects ever changing. Even though the bubbles are all strictly different from each other. A story worth telling and continuing to tell, so that if one bubble bursts, another even more beautiful bubble is immediately made!”
