Taranto, children exceptional guides at the National Museum: they will illustrate ancient toys

Twenty-seven fifth graders will be exceptional guides at the National Archaeological Museum in Taranto for two days: they will illustrate ancient toys to the public.

Little Guides at the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto, where for two days children will be guiding the public: it will happen on Monday, May 8 from 10 a.m. to noon and Thursday, June 1 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Those who will visit the exhibition halls of the MArTA during these time slots will come across exceptional guides, namely the pupils of the fifth classes, sections A and B, of the “Michele Nesca” elementary school of the “Pascoli” Comprehensive Institute of San Giorgio Ionico. Twenty-seven boys and girls who, in the vicinity of the showcases that tell the art of music and the role of play in antiquity, will show visitors how much culture can contribute to the healthy growth of the new generations.

The project that MArTA has enthusiastically embraced is called “History is Us,” and it aimed to let these students experience the history and cultural offerings of the area as protagonists. Among ancient poppatoi, polychrome terracotta dolls, rattles, and astragals, the game recounts its role in the education of citizens in Greek and Roman times. Games and toys prepared for community life, just as this project of St. George’s elementary school will remain as a milestone in the education of these future adults. Educational and training value also lies in the information these young guides will provide along the path dedicated to music.

The tympanon percussion, forerunners of our tambourines, cymbals, aulos, zither or lyra such as the one preserved at MArTA consisting of a sound box made from the carapace of a turtle, will be presented to visitors in simple language that can be used by small delegations of 10- and 11-year-olds.

“With these days we substantiate in practice the mission of museums,” says the regional director Museums of Apulia, Luca Mercuri, acting director of MArTA, “because by making these important heritages of knowledge accessible and available, we not only ensure the continuation of their preservation and protection, but also make an important contribution to the growth of society and sustainable development.”

The contact person for the “History is Us” project is teacher Vincenzo Liuzzi. The team of teachers who enabled this experience consists of Elisabetta De Giorgio, Anna Maria Cordella, Anna Rosa Milano, Maria Grazia Blasi, and Camilla Sangermano. Meanwhile, everything is also ready for the first Sunday of the month with free access. In fact, on Sunday, May 7, #gratisalmuseo returns with the opening of the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
