A major exhibition on Federico da Montefeltro in Gubbio: 3 venues and 260 works

From June 20 to October 2, 2022, Gubbio will host on three venues (Palazzo Ducale, Palazzo dei Consoli and Museo Diocesano) a major exhibition on Federico da Montefeltro on the 600th anniversary of his birth.

An exhibition over three venues in Gubbio to retrace the story of Federico da Montefeltro (Gubbio, 1422 - Ferrara, 1482) on the 600th anniversary of his birth: entitled Federico da Montefeltro e Gubbio. Lì è tucto el core nostro et tucta l’anima nostra the exhibition, curated by Francesco Paolo Di Teodoro with Lucia Bertolini, Patrizia Castelli and Fulvio Cervini, which runs from June 20 to October 2, 2022 at the Ducal Palace, Palazzo dei Consoli and Diocesan Museum. On display are more than 260 works with also exceptional loans: books, paintings, documents, medals, coins, weapons, armor, sculptures and furniture to discover in totality the famous figure of Federico da Montefeltro.

Gubbio thus celebrates the 600th anniversary of the duke’s birth that took place in this very city on June 7, 1422 and where he had his second palace built on the model of the one in Urbino. The title of the exhibition bears the words of Duke Federico himself in a letter dated 1446 addressed to the Gonfaloniere and Consuls of Gubbio, in which he expresses his affection and the utmost intensity of his feelings for the Umbrian city: “because we are aware that there is all our heart and all our soul there.” The exhibition is promoted by the National Committee for the Celebration of the Sixth Centenary of the Birth of Federico da Montefeltro, Regional Directorate of Museums Umbria, Municipality of Gubbio, Diocese of Gubbio, Ducal Palace of Gubbio, Palazzo dei Consoli and Diocesan Museum with the contribution of the Region of Umbria, the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia, in collaboration with Gubbio Cultura and Multiservizi and Festival del Medioevo. The catalog is by Silvana editoriale. The organization is entrusted to Maggioli Cultura.

The exhibition’s narrative unfolds among the glorious moments experienced by the city of Frederick and his son Guidubaldo, the last of the Montefeltros, over a century-long span of history from the duke’s birth in 1422 to Guidubaldo’s death in 1508, also becoming an opportunity to reread the history of Gubbio between the late 14th and early 16th centuries. The exhibition gives space to works on loan from prestigious Italian and foreign institutions as well as private collectors: manuscripts, paintings, documents, medals, coins, weapons, armor, sculptures, and furnishings. An exceptional loan comes from the Vatican Library, which preserves the entire library of Frederick and his successors: as many as fifteen splendid manuscripts arrive (among them only two facsimiles) that can be admired distributed among the three venues.

Each venue of the exhibition houses multiple sections that embrace in totality the celebrated figure of Federico da Montefeltro. At the Ducal Palace, the life of the court, the building events of the palace and the arts in Gubbio during the Feltresco period are recounted. Palazzo dei Consoli presents a first section devoted to making, looking at, and thinking about war in Federico da Montefeltro’s time and another to the duke’s humanistic culture. Finally, at the Diocesan Museum, the exhibition is dedicated to the mathematical, astronomical and astrological sciences, particularly dear to the court and the duke.

“It was with Federico da Montefeltro and the construction of the palace in the old court that Gubbio became the second seat of the duchy, a second capital rich in pre-Roman and classical vestiges,” the curators explain. “A place where Frederick had the studiolo replicated - inextricably linking the Marche and Umbrian palaces - and where the court could move to and stay, enjoying the same privileges and ”comforts“ as Urbino, but far from the political and military ambitions. On the other hand, the city is a strategic outpost, along the road that joins the Adriatic to the Tyrrhenian, the western bulwark of the duchy and at the same time a place of diffusion of Urbino culture in a hinterland crossroads of artistic and literary languages of different inspiration. These are the strong reasons and motivations behind the Gubbio exhibition on the occasion of the sixth centenary of Frederick’s birth (1422-2022).”
