Curated by Gabriella Belli and Janne Sirén, the exhibition bringscontemporary art into Venice’s Doge’s Palace. The installation is at the center of the fifth edition of MUVE Contemporaneo, a biennial exhibition of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia that aims to reflect on the relationship of current art with museums. The title refers to the writings of Venetian philosopher Andrea Emo.

The Fondazione Musei Civ ici had invited Kiefer in 2019, and the choice to host one of his works inside the Doge’s Palace was intended to measure the ability of this place-symbol of the Serenissima Republic-to still be a center of living culture and not just memory. Anselm Kiefer created this cycle of paintings specifically for the Doge’s Palace during 2020 and 2021: his works are in close confrontation with the thirty-three monumental canvases on the ceiling and with the heroic valence of the entire decorative cycle of the Palace, underlining the role of contemporary art in reflecting on universal themes.

These paintings arise from negation, from the erasure of others to which they are superimposed, they are in a sense the outcome of the fire that burned the entire decoration of the room in 1577, but they too are destined to die when they move away from the Ducal Palace.

The exhibition is supported by Gagosian, with the collaboration of the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio for the Municipality of Venice and Laguna.
